Persephone Report 6 Aug 2014 03:30

I will have a look later Huia.. himself was to get the 9.15am bus to Taumaranui from Manukau City this morning (had to be there at 9am) and we stood in the cold and waited and waited and in the finish I went and got back in the car and the bus arrived and he left at 9.45am.. but then I got a text he was only going as far as Hamilton and then would wait again for the correct bus to come through a half an hour later.. I was glad I was in the warmth, I met my friend from Paparimu for lunch.

Too many people in my tree went to war and I have an awful lot who died during that time as well.. I listed them once and since then have found a few more.
My grandmother's two brothers returned but four of her first cousins died in that war.

Poor wee Esme she certainly has some battles to fight and colds will probably affect her a lot harder than sturdy little ones.

That is awful about your chooks Mandy.. another friend's daughter had (fox got them) 5 or 6 ducks.. they always stuck together like a bunch of gossips, so was surprised that no one heard the commotion when the attack happened. He had left two dead to come back for later.

He will be back tonight with the truck..

I arrived back from Christchurch 2 days ago. They didn't put on an earthquake for me :-( but then I had felt one there back in the 80s. I have been busy putting some of my photos on FB, haven't quite finished yet. They are in 3 albums.

Hi Sue, and everyone

Amanda ........... what an awful thing to do.

I guess someone thought it would be "fun"

Louts!

It is a shade cooler today, and thus a little more pleasant!

I had to go for physio, and it was really quite pleasant walking on the shady side of the street, then looking north down side streets to see the water and the mountains :-)

Physio is down on what we call "4th Avenue" which was the heart of hippiedom back in the 60s ................... many of those who live, or frequent, down there are still free spirited!

I saw one old lady (older than me!) pushing her wheelie, and dash out to cross the main road seconds before the lights changed!

Fortunately, she made it across ......................... because the traffic stopped for her :-)

My physio only came home Monday evening ................... from 2 weeks in England.

He loved it, said they had a great time ....................... but was horrified at the cost of everything! Most especially, a small snack for 4 of them

Tec .............. hope you and Archie had a good day, and that you are now enjoying time with your daughter

take care everyone

s
xx

It was a nasty shock Sue :-( The chap who phoned us the morning ( and put two of the birds back in for us ) was trying to lighten the mood by saying " chicken for dinner tonight ? " when we found the headless body on another plot . He soon shut up when I walked off crying :-( He is a good bloke really and no doubt will be asking everyone on the site if they saw anyone looking a bit suspect .

Hello Amanda - I just read this on FB. What a horrid thing to happen. There are some really unpleasant people in the world :-(

Hope Esme is feeling much better soon, Linda - poor little girl <3

Did you and Archie get a gold star, Tec? :-)

Amanda2003 Report 5 Aug 2014 22:27

I'm just nipping in to say " hello folks " .

Linda , I hope poor Esme is feeling better very soon .

Tec , I hope you and Archie got along okay today .

We got back yesterday from our short break on the Norfolk Broads . It was lovely to spend some time on the boat even if the family did manage to track us down .....lol

Unfortunatly getting back has not got off to a good start . We had a phone call this morning saying that our chickens had been let out of their run . It seems that someone must have released between 5.30pm and 9pm ? They where shut out of their run over night ( except for Bluebelle who had the sence to say inside ) , the fox had four of them it seems , we have found one body and various piles of feathers . A chap on the allotments had managed to get the two survivers back into the run this morning , so we are down to three :-( I am so sad and angry .

I have finally got to sit down Eve is in bed but not asleep. Poor Esme is really snotty, not to mention pokey and I won't mention the nappies :-(

I hope the physics were really pleased with you Tec, they should be given the tremendous progress you have made

LindainHerriotCountry Report 5 Aug 2014 10:18

Oh bother. Esme has a dreadful cold so she is not a happy bunny at all. I have managed to get her to sleep, but for how long I don't know. She is really snotty and can't breathe through her nose, so she can't suck her dummy :-(

I haven't checked every one of my ancestors of the right age ...................

the only ones I know of who went to fight in WW1 were my maternal grandfather and my father's eldest brother ........ both survived, and, of course, I knew both of them.

Grandfather was a married man in his early 30s with 3 children when he was mobilized in 1916.

He never talked about the war, and there were no photos of him.

All that I know is from what my mother said, and from the records on Ancestry.

She said he served in Mesopotamia ................... which is more-or-less modern Iraq

The records say he was transferred to the new Machine Gun Corp after basic training, and in 1917 he sailed from Bombay to Basra, and was in several places in Iraq. He was twice in hospital in Baghdad, the last time for influenza.

I'm still trying to find out when, how and why he went to Bombay!

But all those place names were so evocative to me, after the two Gulf Wars!

Mum was 12 years old when he was mobilized, and had to leave school to go to work to help support the family.

My father's brother was about 18 when he was mobilised, and spent most of his time in the France and the UK. He was both wounded and gassed ............. and was never very fit after that.

Despite that, Uncle Harry was still eligible to be called up for WW2 in 1939 .............. until my father who was in Restricted Occupation, discovered that there was an opening at the factory for a janitor ............... Uncle Harry got the job.

17 million died in that war - so hard to imagine.

Most of mine were farmers, so didn't go, and most of the Duchess's were miners, so they didn't go either.

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 4 Aug 2014 23:05

I put my lights out at 10pm as well, except for one small one, and I put a tea candle in the window.

I didn't dare ask for a haircut in case I was attacked with the shears that cut the wisteria :-D

It will be good to come back from the hospital with my daughter.
