after the post going missing found out the relief postie had opened post and taken items of value out and ripped up all other letters but kept them in house. Had letters returned today in ripped up state and one of them is eldests birth cert that she sent off for her provisional licence.

I know they will replace it but its not the same ive had that for 17 years, I know im stupid but its upset me.

I would be upset as well Dawnie, I hope they deal with him promptly.

Question is, how did he get the job in the first place.

Gail
its a woman and she has a regular round but because our postie was off sick she was the relief for his round. 4 days of no post and daughter has had birthday cards not arrive but they wont compensate for the money in them so shes lost out as well.

Apparently the posties normal round customers want her back even though shes been suspended now if that was me i wouldnt trust her again

Surely she got the sack? I cannot understand why the post cannot be compensated.

So who is to be held responsible for this?

I would not want her back either, I had the hide a couple of times to query where my post was when expecting some legal papers, was told " we would like to assure you madam that 96% of the post gets delivered, we only lose 4%" I was told I was being nasty when questioned where had the other 4% gone. That is a lot of mail, was not at the dead letter office either, so probably in someone elses home or garbage bin.

So sorry you have lost such a precious document.

Gail

Something not right here. Why has she not been reprimanded/sacked if she has been stealing from public property? Why do the post office not have the responsibility to pay back money lost. and, if she is a regular postie and has done this, what reason has she given? I suspect the problem with money is that there is no proof. Was it cheques that were in the letters and were they cashed? if so you may have some comeback against the bank that cashed them. If it was a bank. However, nothing is going to compensate for the torn up birth certificate and that is sad. As a woman she should know how important these are to people. and maybe, as they found the pieces and returned them thereby admitting responsibility, they should recompense you for having to buy a new one. Don't let it go, write to head office and write to your local paper (don't mention postie's name).

have spoken to royal mail and as long as i can prove how much they cost they will refund cost of new cert.

card would of had cash in it and i know they dont normal refund lost money by normal post but as they know what she has done and i can get letter from person who sent it saying they did send it and where from i think they should do as its their employee who has taken it, maybe theywill say i have to claim off her.

This used to be a criminal offence - have the police been involved? It may be worth looking into.

My father (who was a postman for 26 years) would be turning in his grave to know that posties are now, aparently, getting away with this on a regular basis. Years ago the Post Office always prosecuted any staff found "Tampering with Her Majesty's Royal Mail" and postmen were sent to prison for misappropriating the contents of mail.

As far as I am concerned it should still be a criminal offence, goodness knows they charge enough for post, we have a right to know they are employing honest people. Not safe to send cash through the mail though dawnie, i didn't think people still did that.

Oh Dawn, what a dreadful experience.
I do understand how you are feeling.
My original birth certificate is a mess, it was opened and folded so many times that it had to be stuck with 'WAR ECONOMY LABEL' tape.
It is part of my history, and although it is time I bought a new one, I will always keep my birth certificate which was give to my parents when they registered me.
I really feel for you Dawn and I hope the post man is severely punished... how dare he.
We have had our mail tampered with in the past.... like breaking into your home, isn't it?

Dawn I have just read the end of the thread.... please don't allow this to be swept under the carpet Dawn.
This is surely a criminal offence and needs to be sorted out!
