Can someone tell why all the new potatoes that I have bought are horrible ....I have tried most super markets, and none come up the the standard that I remember new potatoes used to taste

There was a time that I could not stop eating them .now their yuk....... and I have just left them on my plate tonight !!

Why is that ....does anyone think the same ?????

The only way to get really tasty new potatoes is to grow them your self it seems .
It's a bit late in the year now for new potatoes , the early ones ( English ) where about from June ( ish ).
Shop ones are fairly tasteless compared to home grow.

I totally agree with you, and so would my OH and my father. We all used to be fans of the New Potatoe, but shop bought ones are the pits, these days.Even the once grand Jersey Royal, bears no resemblence to those of say 5 years ago. Lincs. and Cornish are no better. Thankfully we grow our own. But I think the crisis with New Potatoes, is that they are grown for quantity rather than quality, these days, and taste has been bred out of them

My husband made the same comment at the weekend and I have to agree - bought jerseys as I thought at least they woud be ok but they were pretty tasteless too. Don't know why it is but presumably something to do with mass production and the methods used.

bring back the good old days!

Hi
Jane
I have bought from three well known super markets,
but I'll have a look at what you have suggested.....now the ones that I have left ,and the rest of the packet will be in a chip butty tomorrow with plenty of salt for flavoring...!!

Hubby will eat them...LOL

Glad that some of you agree with me....

As a PS to my message above, we grow Lady Crystal as our first earlies, and choose something different every year for the two varieties of main croppers. There is a variety that you can grow, that crops at Christmas, possibly from someone like Thomson and Morgan, which you could grow in a tub or large pot, just enough for Chrismas Day Dinner. Have a look in the gardening mags. for seed catalogues etc., they are free.

Charlotte and nadine are about the best tasting new potato these days ,brought ,or grown yourself.
I grow mine in barrels now ,but even when grown in a garden they are pretty slug resistant.
I start mine off in march ,buying potatoes from asda or morrisons, and wait till they chit, they are lovely ,and just in time for christmas. Fred.

I find all potatoes not as nice, I think it is the overuse of fertilisers to maximise the yield.

I'm not kidding you the ones I had for dinner tonight from a reputable store ,

A pig would turn his nose up too !!

So Its a careful selection from now on ....pity Harrods is so far away.!
