Can someone tell why all the new potatoes that I have bought are horrible ....I have tried most super markets, and none come up the the standard that I remember new potatoes used to taste |

The only way to get really tasty new potatoes is to grow them your self it seems . |

I totally agree with you, and so would my OH and my father. We all used to be fans of the New Potatoe, but shop bought ones are the pits, these days.Even the once grand Jersey Royal, bears no resemblence to those of say 5 years ago. Lincs. and Cornish are no better. Thankfully we grow our own. But I think the crisis with New Potatoes, is that they are grown for quantity rather than quality, these days, and taste has been bred out of them |

My husband made the same comment at the weekend and I have to agree - bought jerseys as I thought at least they woud be ok but they were pretty tasteless too. Don't know why it is but presumably something to do with mass production and the methods used. |

As a PS to my message above, we grow Lady Crystal as our first earlies, and choose something different every year for the two varieties of main croppers. There is a variety that you can grow, that crops at Christmas, possibly from someone like Thomson and Morgan, which you could grow in a tub or large pot, just enough for Chrismas Day Dinner. Have a look in the gardening mags. for seed catalogues etc., they are free. |

I find all potatoes not as nice, I think it is the overuse of fertilisers to maximise the yield. |
