The officers are on the first page but not possible to say which regiment they are in, either from the census or the London Gazette.

I'd say your man was in the 2nd battalion of the 25th foot which was the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. Also, as he was born in Heligoland I'd say it was highly likely that his father was in the Army too.

Sgt Major isn't an officer!

I'll have another look.

No - sorry that was the reply to the message saying check for an officer on a different page. My rel is James Smith but I had only printed the one page and Abraham Hook was the only officer. Sorry again Jac.

Having just looked on the 1861, it was a James Smith who was born in Heligoland and who was in the 2/25th. I thought you were looking for Abraham Hook????

My gt gt g'father was in the 2/25th batallion based here in 1861 but what type of batallion I don't know. Does anyone know what part of the army this could have been?
He was born in Heligoland as a British Subject. I wonder whether he was in the army etc when over there. Does anyone have any insight into Newport Barracks? I see there were a couple of barracks there.
Any military historians out there? Thanks Jac.

I've only got one page. Abraham Hook was Sgt Major. Will see what I can find. Aged 29 in 1861 born Cambridge. Ta

No joy on that front I'm afraid.

Have you got this from the 1861 census? If you go back page by page to the first entry for the officers before him, the regiment might well be given. What was his name?
