HELP MADE BIG MISTAKE!!!

HELP!! i've made a big boob. not only have i not backed up my tree elsewhere, i some how added my nan Ethel Franklin twice, once as herself and once as a sibling..then proceeded to add to the sibling instead of her so branches off wrongly. not happy with that i then deleted my nan thinking it might connect and now its gone to pot. oops the correct bits are out there in cyber space somewhere and show if you connect to someone else down the track but dont show via my nan...MMMM tricky one, i even tried marrying the sibling ethel to her husband but didnt work either.(deleted that idea)..:-)
If anyone understands my mistake and can advise how to coorrect, i'd be grateful as the branch goes alone way.(went further on ancestry)
Thanks Cindy

Mistakes like this can happen if you try to move on before it has finished saving. Contact GR . Explain what it should be and they will sort it.

Not sure that I understand what you have done, but have you tried going to the botton half of the screen, where all the information is, and doing an Edit?....Might be best to delete a few and start them again.

GR always puts the males to the left and the females to the right. My daughter in law was married before she married my son and she had a daughter. What a mess I got into with that! I started by putting my son's name in first, then his wife, then their son - but because I wanted to put her daughter in too, I tried to put the first husband in and GR pushed the wife further to the right - finishing up with the two men married to each other with a son between them - and the wife out on her own with the daughter. No matter what I do, it won't put her in the middle!

The GR tree is, lets say, not ideal and has trouble handling certin relationships which a proper genealogical software can cope with.

I can't see, at the moment, how to allocate children to the correct parents when both of their parents have been married preciously.

Well, I've managed to end up with 3 copies of the same person in my tree!! If I highlight one, it highlights them all, if I try to edit one, it does them all!! I think I will have to contact GR to put it right. lol

Hi All,
You can allocate children to specific parents. ie where the father has married twice & has had children by either or both marriages. There are two ways of doing this

1, If the children are already in the tree and not showing against the correct parent. Click on that child to bring up their details & click on the Change Parents icon (this is next to the Edit icon) & chose the correct parent pairing.
This will then automatically save the changes made.

This part is not very user friendly. You'll probably find that the child is now showing on its own on the screen. Don't panic, close & reopen the tree. This will then show the tree in its changed format.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2, When adding children to the tree. You can add them to specific parents. Always start from the details of the mother. Click on Add Child, it will ask you to choose the appropriate father.
Further children of that marriage can be added in this way. Or can be added as siblings of that child.
When you add a sibling it will automatically choose the same parents.

Regards,
Steve

Cindy, me too.
I have my granddad married twice to the same woman.
They were married at 19 and stayed together until they died.
I think what I did in this case is, I tried to make a separate tree for my granny's side of the family.... early mistake but I have been stuck with it.
I have also given ages to my people which are obviously so wrong... but I carried on after being told that I had made a mistake.
Ah well, I will have to live with it I suppose, although it would be nice if I could go back and correct all my mistakes.

Notify genes of your mistake and they will rectify if you tell then exactly what you have done wrong. I was given dud info from a cousin and they - genes, helped me amend tree

I have tried that Mark, but they told me the usual.
You cannot do anything if there are children in the line..... para phrasing here, but you know what I mean.

Buy some decent software, download your GEDCOM from the GR site and edit it independent of GR, and then upload the finished file.
I have always used my own software for total control of editing and backing up. Do not put any faith in other parties to look after years of your hard work.
