I was going to say Carole, no tax disc, no refund but it looks as though you think he has it. Hope he gets his refund OK.

Seen the tax disk holder on our kitchen table, so looks like he did remember to take it out. I printed a form off the web site for him to fill in, and get his refund. He should have taken it into the office in town now

Methinks that he has dropped the ball, so to speak.

I once worked for a firm that sold off to a couple of the employees a jeep/landrover thingy.....at a bargain price...........

the lads got a real bargain, for the refund on the tax disc was worth more than what they paid for the vehicle...........

I would have thought the tax disc was now the property of the scrapyard if he left it in the car and that they will be due any refund now if they choose to claim it back.

Thank you all for your replies. I think he forgot to take the disk out of the car when he took it to the scrap yard! Now he is making out he can't get a refund cos the cars not MOT'ed. I felt sure he was wrong. Why wouldn't you be able to get a refund for road tax on a car you had paid for, but then taken off the road. I realise he needs to get a move on

Thanks

The Post Office no longer do the refunds, you have to send it off to DVLA, well that's what my main PO told me to do recently.

he doesnt need MOT cert,,just log book, old Tax Disc, and write the car is scraped.....dates etc,,,

Bobtanian Report 27 Oct 2009 11:14

he will at least need all the details from the log book to declare sorn,

BUT!

When SORN has been declared for a vehicle the registered keeper must ensure that it will not be used or kept on a public road until a new licence has been taken out. The declaration will be valid for 12 months unless the vehicle is re-licensed, sold, permanently exported or scrapped.

Before continuing please be aware that you should not declare SORN if the vehicle has been sold, permanently exported or scrapped.

I had my car set on fire back in 2004,luckily the tax disc was intact & all I did was declare SORN & explained to DVLA what had happened.
And got a refund no problem.
You can get the refund form from a Post Office or you can download one from the DVLA website & all the info you need is on that site.

Hope this helps.

I'd agree with Hawkwind - also make sure he fills in a SORN. The scrap yard may not bother with sending off the change in ownership form for some time.

Unless they've changed the rules, the only criteria was that you could only claim for months that were in future,

IE you MUST surrender the tax before the 1st of the month.......
I think handing in on the 1st is not good enough

Not heard of that before and there is no mention of it on the Govt website. Where did he get the info from?

He will need to get his skates on otherwise he will loose a months worth. It needs to be in before the 1st November to get three month back, otherwise he will only get two.

My sons car was taxed until Jan, but after it failled it's MOT, which ran out Sunday, and needed about three hundred pounds spending on it, he decided to scrap the T reg Vectra.
Yesterday it went to the scrap yard. Today he looked to claim back his over paid tax, and tells me he can't claim it back because it has no MOT. Is that right?
I'm going out so will reply to any answers later thanks Carole
