YG Report 18 Jan 2013 17:32

Evening all. Snowing here thick and fast. It started about 2.30ish, light at first, then heavier. Managed a skid on the road leaving work, but the main roads were reasonable; however, it is much heavier now, so I'm not sure that I will be going anywhere tomorrow unless I walk to the local shops. If not, I will be living off what is in the freezer.

It is the end of an awful week, with 18 jobs at risk (luckily, not mine, our team are safe), but my friend will be going and she is quite tearful. There are the equivalent number of new posts, but nothing for HR and the majority are higher management jobs. it has been a dreadful atmosphere at work today and I am gutted about her. They are also saying they will consider any voluntary redundancies and anyone that wants to leave for any other reason is welcome to do so! :-P :-P

I am just pleased it is the weekend :-(

YG how awful nowhere is safe with job issues i think it is all just a worry
we are still on the edge of snowing at the moment but it was freezing well when i came in ,A is taking his car for MOT about now which is up the hill a little however he s quite experienced but i still worry once we hit the main roads we are ok here its the roads on the estate that causes the problems

YG Report 18 Jan 2013 18:09

I know, Maz. Because I am on a corner I park on the side road as I have an entrance there too, plus there is less risk of a car skidding into me than if I park outside the front gate! But it is a quiet street, so the snow builds up. Perhaps I will get to use my new wellies and snow shovel after all!! :-D :-D

Mazfromnorf Report 18 Jan 2013 18:29

Good evening everyone. It seems we have all been affected by snow, it started at 2.00 o'clock and stopped about ten minutes ago. OH came home early and has cleared the drive and some of the footpath. His son rang he went into a skid and ended up across the other side of the road his car is now stuck in deep snow, passers by tried to help push him out, OH is now on his way to pick him up............. I HATE snow! Stay safe.

Mazfromnorf Report 18 Jan 2013 19:34

it is just cold here the car has gone through MOT so one more tick off
I am going to take my gear in tomorow as we have a spare flat at the moment so there is a bed if push comes to shove tomorrow night as i star at 8 am on sunday so it would make sense to get stuck lol

Oh dear – 3 tales of woe.

Sorry that the suspicions your friend had have been confirmed YG. The redundant Higher Managers have been found other jobs? Hm. Wasn’t the objective to save money?

Hope your heart has stopped racing LG. It must have been scary to do a twirl across the road.

That’s what’s Dads are for isn’t it, rescuing when you are stuck? :-D Hope the son’s car isn’t damaged when he eventually manages to extricate it!

Good luck with your shifts tomorrow Maz. May they be peaceful and event free….and that you can manage to leave early if the takeover staff get in on time.

As predicted, only a cm or so for us, meaning we went out for lunch. Our main fall is expected on Sunday coming over from France. At the moment, they think it will be about 5 cm and “likely to cause disruption”. It had better not – I’ve a Monday morning session to attend and the participating students to arrive. The route from home has a steep downward hill ending at a T junction. The council had better have gritted it, or there will be chaos! :-|

Evening all. I was not over worried DET. We get a lot of black ice on our roads so it is part of the course in winter here. We just take extra care and keep our speeds down.

YG

YG Report 18 Jan 2013 19:46

Oh goodness, DET, that hill sounds risky!! Will OH drive you there, or are you going to be a big brave girl!!

They forecast snow through till Tuesday here, but with temperatures really dipping to -5degs so they are expecting ice to be much more of a problem. It is still snowing steadily, but much smaller flakes now.

I hope you enjoyed your lunch out.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 18 Jan 2013 19:55

LOL - the road will probably be fine as its on a Red gritting route - its the other drivers who don't know how to cope that's the problem and everything backs up for 2 miles into the village. OH is talking about putting grit on our drive so I have a clear run up it, but that can wait until late Sunday.
He's already mentioned the 10 mile diversion to come home avoiding the hill - lol

One of my 'would like to' things is to have a go on a skid pan if they still offer the opportunity to the general public. Touch wood, apart from the occasional fish-tail, I've never got into a spin. Both Dad and OH have gone about what to do, often enough not that you can really prepare for black ice

Toad in the Hole + a free extra portion of fancy veggies - they had probably prepared too many. ;-)

Evening YG. Sorry I missed both you and Paula. My brain is elsewhere today as I have a very good friend seriously ill in hospital. Just had news she has improved slightly so fingers and everything else crossed that she continues to get better.

YG

YG Report 18 Jan 2013 21:41

Oh dear, that's not good news, LG. I hope she recovers fully. :-)

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 18 Jan 2013 22:36

Well I am hoping and praying but there is a possibility that she will have kidney damage,so not so good :-(

YG

YG Report 18 Jan 2013 22:41

That is very sad, LG. I wish her well and hope that things won't be as bad as you expect.

I am off to bed now, so hopefully will catch you at some point tomorrow.

Sleep well and keep warm! <3

morning all,
Big hugs LG for you and your friend always hard to deal with
My aunt is due home from hospital into the middle of nowhere today after a hip replacement once she gets home it will be fine its just the journey though
we have about four inches of snow but i suspect by the time i travel that the main roads will be ok

LaGooner

LaGooner Report 19 Jan 2013 08:57

Morning Maz, thanks for the hugs I need them at the moment with so much to deal with in life. I do hope Auntie gets home safely as there is no place like home. We had a little more snow overnight but not to bad by the looksof the view out of the window. I am sure all the main roads are ok but our village streets are not too clever.

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 19 Jan 2013 10:01

Morning all

Sorry to hear about your friend LG. We are here to support you supporting her, if that makes sense.

Maz – hope your aunt’s op goes ahead as planned. Sometimes orthopaedic surgeons have to cancel their elective lists because the post op wards are full of broken limbs caused by slipping on the ice. My own aunt and mother in law had their knee ops postponed a couple of years ago in similar conditions. Take care getting to the main roads later.

Hope you’re resting up today YG, ready for what next week brings to you!
