Oh Dear DET. I really would like to let you know we celebrate such an important day as "Commonwealth Day" with a public holiday. However in this case our holiday on Monday 12th March is for a horse race, the Adelaide Cup.

We in South Australia have the day off so about 17000 of us can go to the horse races. I think it is a compensation to those living in SA because Victoria has the Melbourne Cup in November, and they have a holiday then.

There have been mutterings about removing it from our calendar but the unions seem to like it so there it stays. It used to be in May but it rained every year so they moved the date to March and now it clashes with Mad March where we have the Festival, Fringe and the car races and other stuff.

I will try the refresh button next time the screen freezes. Thanks YG. It does not happen very often and judging by other's complaints I am very lucky with how welll my GR works.

Our temperature is hoving around 28 of a day time but the next two days will be in the low 30s, then we have two days of rain forecast and slightly lower temps. Night time is going down to 13 degrees, so autumn approacheth. Which means flaming, freezing, miserable winter is not too far away again.

And a hose pipe ban come April :-D

That's a sure sign for the heavens to open and drown any hope of taking advantage of the warmer weather. We'll be having outbreaks malaria next.

YG - weren't you supposed to be having your Annual Review about now, and had been thinking about cutting down on your hours?

Honestly, having public holidays for a sporting event? Well I never!

YG

YG Report 12 Mar 2012 20:45

Mmm, annual review :-P The mid term review was due in October, but that hasn't happened yet, let alone the start of the new review. We are greatly understaffed in our department, 50% of full timers gone (2 out of 4) with only a temp 3 days a week and an apprentice.

Ideally, I would like to wait until the bungalow has been completed. unless an opportunity to take my part time hours in the Education & Information department comes to fruition. I won't remain in the admin department on part time hours, I would rather retire first than stay in there!!

hi all
xxx

gale force winds and rain overnight Sunday and until after lunchtime on Monday ........ winds reached 120 km/h off the outer coast, 80-90 here in the big city.

We seemed to be OK in our area ........... just trees and branches blowing around, but quite a bit of damage, and power outages throughout the city, and elsewhere.

Our clocks went forward on Sat/Sun night .......... did you know that the Monday after the clocks go forward has the highest incidence of accidents .............. blamed on the clocks being moved. Add this to the gales, and I stayed home until early afternoon!!

For the next 2 weeks, I will be 7 hours behind the UK ............... and no idea how my time relates to Persie or Aunty!

badger Report 13 Mar 2012 09:28

What a difference from yesterday ,i spent two hours in the garden ,sorting out the growing pots ,boxes ,and troughs ,filling them up with spent compost out of my potato barrels ,replanting one of them with Charlotte ,before sorting out where everything was going to be planted in the back garden, and finishing off ,with the lady bosses help ,cleaning out the greenhouse ready for the off .
Today i get up ,and what do i find ,huh ,might have known ,dull chilly ,much back to normal i suppose :-(.
Oh well ,back to the drawing board ,,house work mostly .and finishing off the porch repairs out front .
Looks like all our veggie patches and chicken runs are going to be very important this year ,what with the drought ,and the price of both eggs, and vegetables going through the roof due to water restrictions.
Those of you people with allotments will have to be on guard ,the thefts will go through the roof as well.
Hope everyone is in line for a good week ,no matter what you are up to ,Fred :-D .

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 13 Mar 2012 09:50

Morning all – what a variety of weather reports we have from around the globe – heat, gales and gloom.

Fred, you are lucky to have a garden where things actually grow; ours is north facing surrounded by trees which suck any ‘goodness’ out of the ground. We bought a plastic tent like greenhouse last year, but there couldn’t have been enough air circulation (no windows) and all the tomatoes died of mildew. Even the over wintering geraniums succumbed! We’ll have to get an industrial sized can of Jeyes Fluid and hope that will see the mildew off.

Next door gave me a number of Dahlia (or was it Astor?) tubers to plant up yesterday. And as you said, today is overcast. I’m a fair weather gardener, and it isn’t fair weather!

YG, things will work out; just hang in there. ;-)

Enjoy your day at work Maz. We await in trepidation to hear if you have managed to burn the place down :-D

YG

YG Report 13 Mar 2012 17:43

Hi everyone.

A reasonable sort of day here today, but cloudier and a bit cooler again.

Fred, be careful the Nut Lodgers don't come and raid your garden. We need a plentiful supply of fruit and vegetables here!!

I have given up the idea of trying to grow my own stuff. By the time I have bought all the grow bags, compost and used extra water through the meter, it is cheaper to buy for one person! I usually finish up giving most of it away!!

I hope Maz isn't in the Saltburn area today. The armed police and bomb squad are currently in a stand off by the sea with a woman who has been reported as having suspicious objects on her. :-(

AuntySherlock Report 13 Mar 2012 20:21

Would someone grab Fred, truss him up and chuck him into the padded cell. We need a gardener and until we manage to read the Nut Lodge terms and conditions to him, and convince him he needs to take on the position................

Better remove Glenn first. He has already lost one of his eight legs and Fred will probably have a can of bug killer in his back pocket.

Morning all. Very, very warm night. Looks like another mid 30s day today, but we have been promised some rain.

There were 100 of them, all together in the same place at the same time. They were very, very busy but ahhhhhhhhh just the thought of it.. I should have taken refreshments to them.

Well you got me all hot under the collar there Aunty. I was so hot, I shorted out the local substation and put all the power out!! It only came back on about 20 minutes ago, then I had to mess about getting the vision box running properly again for the tv!!

Persephone

Persephone Report 14 Mar 2012 04:04

I can do porch repairs. Know how, can do!!

My daughter and family moved out of their house the other week (now renting) Their house demolished and a new one built.. where all three children will have their own rooms. There will be a family lounge and then a lounge where I will go (this is to be kept tidy ..that'll make a change,) when I visit.

First day nothing happened to house took about three days and then all the tiles came off the roof.. seems a shame they were for the knackers yard as they were the best part of the place. SIL went around and took photos for facebook. Next day we went around early afternoon and the whole house was rubble and some of it in dump trucks... so I texted my SIL and said "house gone" no question mark. Get text back " I don't know will go around tonight and see" I text back
"NO Bxxxx I am telling you the house is gone, I have just been and had a look." About half an hour or so later cellphone rings when I am in supermarket. Either penny has just dropped. he needed to think about it or he was busy with a coffin or dead body. Photos went up on facebook that night of all the rubble and mess,

That was Friday no progress this week... why? He had a bit of trouble getting the gas board to go around and turn the gas off. They can turn up for smelly onions or slippers but not to turn it off. That will be another two to three weeks revenue that the gas board will reap. They had been advised well beforehand.

Persie :-( :-P
