Thank you Aunty - thats' been printed out. Whether we will actually make it is another matter! We could probably use some of the screw top empty wine bottles to store it....in the shed :-D

Sorry to hear you're under the weather. Just don't go back to work before you are really better or you'll have a relapse. Ladies of the tender age of 35, need to take it easy :-P

GINGER BEER

Ginger Plant

1 teaspoon compressed yeast
1 cup water
9 teaspoons sugar
9 teaspoons ground ginger.

Mix yeast and one teaspoon sugar in large jar add water (barely warm) and one teaspoon ground ginger. Cover jar with muslin or milk jug cover. Leave for 8 days, adding one teaspoon each of ginger and sugar every day.

……..

Ginger Beer.

2lb sugar
½ cup strained lemon juice
10 pints water

Put sugar and 2 pints of measured water on to heat, stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, add remaining 8 pints water and lemon juice. Strain contents of jar (now called “plant”) through two thicknesses of fine muslin. Add to sugar and water mixture. Stir well, pour into 8 bottles, stirring mixture frequently as sediment settles quickly. Seal with patent bottle seals and leave about five days, depending on the weather. Warm weather hastens the process of fermentation. Chill before serving.

…………………………………

The plant sediment in the muslin is now halved. Add one teaspoon each ginger and sugar and one cup water to each jar (not yeast after first start). Repeat process as before, add sugar and ginger daily.

You can give one plant away and use your plant again and keep multiplying it.

Word of warning. Store the ginger beer in a safe place. We used to keep ours in the garden shed. The bottles have been known to blow their tops or even break. As for the “muslin” if I remember correctly I used to use a piece of clean fine material for the straining.

Hello, Remember me. Well Australia has just beaten Sri Lanka in the cricket. That is probably good news. Me well I am currently on the sick list. There is some sort of flu or virus going around, and I think I might have it. I first thought I had overdone the fitness a bit because of aches and pains but a fuzzy head, runny nose, dizziness and blocked ears leads me to believe the germs have arrived.

Every second person I know is complaining about feeling ill so please disinfect your monitor screen after you read this.

Reason I am communicating, apart from letting you know I am still alive is to do with the ginger beer query. I have a proper ginger beer plant recipe. It is stuck in my old recipe book and would be at least 30 or 40 years old. It is in old fashioned imperial measurements and for some reason I have altered the quantity of water in the recipe. I made it many many times in the olden days and I know it worked. I'll type it out for you and post it on this thread.

Morning all.

Yes Pauline, thats the one I have. Since it has the starter mix on the link, you could always have a go and see if the Day Centre are interested in taking it on as a therapy activity! As long as it is kept at room temperature, it could be left over the weekend with no problems.

Thank you, but it might be best if you keep your same name clans to yourselves; we probably have enough trouble with our own - lol

Since I went to bed rather late last night, I've got up 'too early'. May have a nana nap later :-0

I have the same problem, Sylvia, massive families all the way back and all the siblings in every generation gave their children the same Christian names. Most of them were born in the same area as well, quite a few families lived in the same street.

Mind you, we lived in the same street as my dad's mother.............. so did one of his brothers and 2 of his sisters.

I'd never heard of a 'Friendship Cake', had to Google it. This one looked nice...
