Hi Cath, hope that your Hubby is okay now. What a worry for both of you.

Will you have to do the school run tomorrow, or will the school be closed like so many others are?

I should have been out with the Ring & Ride this morning, but as I was a bit under decided to save my strenght and potter around at home instead.

The snow started about an hour after I cancelled the Ring & Ride. It snowed for about an haour then stopped.
Has snowed a bit this afternoon and looks like it will snow this evening/tonight.

Traffic still moving on the road outside, buses running too.
Hope to go out with the R & R early on Saturday morning, before it gets too crowded.

My word, you have your hands full Cath, I hope your hubby is ok now. What a worry, to have to leave him home alone when you can't get back quickly.

Hope things ease up for you.

Well what a start to the day .
Left for school run at 8.10 am...... got within 1/4 mile , stuck in traffic due to an accident , eventually got him into school at 9.20 am .

Then gets back home and hubby who is disabled had been waiting so long for me to get back so i could help him to the bathroom had tried to get there himself but ended up falling and was stuck at the top of the landing .


Can the day get any worse ?

Frank, you take care, I am glad my son doesn't have his scooter on the road now with the bad weather, at least walking or getting the bus seems safer unless he falls as I did before Christmas. I don't think he would try cycling if the roads are still icy.

Cath, I think lots of schools are delaying the opening, I suppose they need time to warm up again too and check there are no burst pipes. Hope you can make it safely today.

I got my OH the Harry Potter six set for christmas so we've done two each night since new year............she's a big fan.

Cath, I read that first time and thought you meant the roads were so bad that it took you until tomorrow to get back.
After reading Ann's comment, it hit me....................WHAT!!!
Sorry, I just couldn't stop laughing.

Well that's the good times over as I am back to my work tomorrow as a motorcycle courier..................Hey it's going to thaw out in about ten days.

Maggie, no not bought the Tudors yet, don't think I would have time to watch them.

I live on a back street terrace and the gritters don,t come near us .
The road and path are really thick with solid ice , braced myself this morning to take little un to school drove 8 miles to school . gets there and - - - he didn't go back until tomorrow .

I live on an "A" road, so usually not a problem gritting the road. Traffic is usually free flowing. But it can geytvery slow in the rush hour. and/or when the local Prem. football team are playing at home.

I am off shoping with the Ring & Ride bus service tomorrow. A wonderful door to door service. So helpful to anyone who has difficulty getting out and about. It gives us all a new lease of life.

We have snow forecast here for tomorrow and Wednesday so I am extra grateful for the Ring & Ride service. I really couldn't manage to shop without it.

I wouldn't drive today as it is now compacted ice and none of our side roads have been gritted. But really must get out tomorrow to buy OH his birthday pressie. Could always put him an IOU in his card...lol

Last winter Vancouver did not have enough snow clearing equipment, and ran out of the salt/sand mix they use .


............. and they found it hard to get more because the rest of the country was having major snowfalls as well.


Only the main streets were cleared ..... and not well.



We have the Winter Olympics next month



so they bought about $1 million worth of equipment over the summer to be sure the same thing doesn't happen again!


I remember that years ago they used to attach blades to the front of city trucks (eg garbage trucks) and use those when we had snowfalls .............. but they didn't do that last year. I guess the other equipent has become so specialised that they cannot adapt to other uses.



I do remember a time soon after we arrived here when the city ran out of money for snow clearing .......... and they refused to transfer any more over to that account. They said the buses would help in getting the main roads free (or freer) of snow ......... but the buses went on strike.

It took weeks for everything to clear up.



At least now they do spend however much money is needed .................... but they may not have the quipment or the salt/sand!

Yes I saw that Frank, last feb Gloucestershire ran out of grit.

Been posting yesterday with regard to lack of salted pavements etc with the following....

If the councils had the manpower, they would probably be short of vehicles.
If the councils had the vehicles, they would probably be short of manpower.
If the councils had the manpower, and the vehicles, they would probably be short of salt.

..................and today, hey presto Fife Council in Scotland have .........run out of salt !

You really couldn't make it up ..................

I hate driving (or rather travelling as I don't drive in the states or Canada) on those gravel roads.

Only about 12 kms is on gravel, the rest is paved roads, and pretty good ones. It takes about 1 hour each way.

Kathleen .............. the lady from 100 Mile House wasn't called Ev or Evelyn was she?

100 Mile House is the closest "town" to where we have our cabin ............... it's a 60km drive away, so "shopping on Friday" is a major expedition for us!

I know Ev/Evelyn, met her through Friends Reunited, then met her in person, and am still in contact. Don't know whether she was a member on here though ................ she was/is tracing her family, and we have the name Cott(e)rell in common. Never have managed to work out if they are the same family or not!

I have seen some of the nastiness seeing as the time difference means that my most active time on here is in the wee hours UK time. That's the main reason I don't go near Chat!!

But there are also some people even on the other threads who can be mean, even to people who are trying to help them ....... maybe just a bad day for them, but it's unnecessary.

I do have a little black book of such names!!!

I've tried the Spring Water at St Ann's Well in Malvern. Well had a little sip anyway.

Lovely views from Malvern Ridge if you can get up that far.

I went Youth Hostelling with my son in Malvern in 1985. (Just found his YHA Membership card a couple of days ago.)

I used to work as a waiter for British Transport Hotels in the 70s and we used to served bottled Malvern water at most of our meetings, functions.
That was long before bottled water was the in thing with the alternatives being sparkling Perrier and of course Vichy water which tasted like bath water so I was probably right first time round!

" Whit, drink it? Naw, ye'll waash yur face in ut lik the rest o' us! "

Used to spend a lot of time in the South of France in the 60s (French born / French dad/ Scots mum) and the tap drinking water there was terrible too.

The toilets were "fun" as well but at least the weather was nice.

I remember trying the waters at Bath many years ago , it was horrid, btw, I bought two folding cups from the shop in the Lakes, they were called campers cups, we have them when we go out so we can have a drink from a can, dont like drinking from cans, the only problem was if you dont twist the cup tight it collapses on you...lol....
