Wow,I have started to read the book.I dont think I would of liked to live in those days. They had it tough,I never knew that if you were a widow you had to pay the King a fee to stay that way if you wished otherwise you were found a husband. And that was for the higher class, imagin what the lower class of people went through! 'Good for you Robin Hood.'

The North East was omitted from the Doomsday book so they had their own written. It was called Bolden Buke. It is downloadable in pdf format from googlebooks.

the following site has a search engine for the country

Hi Debra,
The domesday book is online, with basic details, and a more detailed account of places/names will cost £3.50.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/domesday.asp

However, trying to find a person by surnae may be difficult, as name spellings have changed so much.
For example, one of my ancestors was called Cattermole.
we found the parish church in the village where the family had lived for generations. Cattermole was spelt at least 6 different ways in 200 years, the first one, in the 16the century being spelt Kackermoulle.

I have no idea about family names in the Domesday book, though it is something I would love to find out. Yes I'd say it would be a good thing to be mentioned, it's a definite part of our history and to find out that our own ancestors were possibly in there would be wonderful.

Friends of my friends were talking, and we came on the subject of finding your roots.Well I had no idea, what she was talking about when I was asked if my roots went back to the doomsday book?I just gave her a blank stare, then replied I dont know.I googled it when I got home,I can not remember being taught this at school.(History)Am I the only one?? And how do I find out if any family are listed? Also is it a good thing to have been listed? Debra.
