do you remember when a public telephone box was a real work of art,with book's on a string and they didnt smell of wee!!!...
those were the day's..

and you didnt get some one speaking to you from a call centre......

and the speaking clock.....what a lovely posh voice she had.......

And for a few old pence(think 4) you could talk for hours.

I use to put 3 pennies in ,but someone worked out if you tapped the bar that the receiver sat on the call went through without having to put money in.If say you wanted the number 123 you would tap once,then twice and then 3 times.It worked everytime lol.
I do think phone boxes always smelled of wee though!!

I seem to remember them smelling of something, don't think it was wee though. and did you press button B every time you went past? The number of people who forgot so you got money back. And hoe about long distance calls when you'd get the operator telling you 'your time is up caller'?

At one of the places I worked about forty years ago a lady used to come round on the bus and clean the telephones. I think she worked for the GPO.

If you were a Girl Guide one of the six items you had to keep in your breast pocket were coins (4 pennies) for emergency calls...........also to have pencil, paper,clean handkerchief,..... can anyone recall the other two...........ooh I'm 'not prepared' lol

I can remember folk coming into offices etc. to clean the phones
