Daughter In Law and Son In Law were also used for what we now know as step daughter and step son, so it may be worth looking at that aspect too. Sometimes they described them as step daughter/son and sometimes as daughter/son in law. |

I have a couple of 14 yrs with child down on census as DIL and though no something isnt right but it could be, are lying about their ages... |

It is Hayley, the reason I remember it is because it is around the time my parents were born, one in 1931 and the other in 1932. Adoption was legalised in 1927 in case anyone needs to know for the future. |

About the age of consent was for marriage, I know in the 1700's that a female could marry at the age of 12yrs and male 14yrs in the late 1700's you had to have your parents or guardians concent until you was 21yrs doesnt any one what age you could marry in the about 1840's was it still 12yrs for female or had it changed, thanks |
