I wanted to watch a late showing which I thougth was a repeat of A.R. which was listed in the tv mag as being at 3.10am Sunday morning. I went through and moved the clock on the mantlepiece to just after 4pm and switched on the tv, to see a woman being pleasantly shocked at the value of a small figurine and then a chap telling how at the age of 11 he had bought a bundle of posters from a woman who had bought the contents of a loft, in a sale, and he offered her 50p which she took (must have been after 1971) When he got home he found the parcel contained about 100 posters about travel, railway and such and all kinds of interesting pictures. The woman valuing them was very impressed and the ones on show were all over £1000 in value, each, so he has an amazing collection, all for 50p. Then the show finished, I was kicking myself as I had forgotten about the hour difference. I looked in the paper and the write up for later today's A.R. says from Stanway House, in the Cotswolds and goes on to tell about a purchased of posters for 50p getting a nice surprise. Neither of the programmes are marked as repeats! How strange is that, I am glad tho as I can watch the whole programme now and see where the figurine came from too

Well I recorded the end part so saw the posters again and an ornament worth £6000 that someone got from her inlaws kitchen! The chap with the posters got a bargain with his 50p all those years ago, even the few he took to the show were worth around £30,000!

I wish I had inherited something lovely and valuable but knowing me I wouldn't want to part with it lol

Claire, that must have been so upsettting for your friend.

I had some Torquayware? pottery, a little butter and jam dish with a handle between the two, it came from my paternal grandmother's when her home was cleared after her death, I didn't get much from her, just little bits Dad thought I would like, but one of my cats knocked it off the kitchen windowsill one day and broke one side, I saved the bit that wasn't broken but it looks odd. Every time I see anything similar on tv I feel sad that my piece got broken, it wasn't valuable but it was to me. I also had a lovely pink lustre jug on my bathroom windowsill because it matched the tiles almost exactly, and my son stood up in the bath when he was a toddler and knocked it over, breaking it.
Yet any old cheap rubbish from local shops or whatever, stays intact! Sod's law I suppose!

Star

Star Report 30 Mar 2010 17:27

I loved the program but not just for the antiques but because my grand dad did some carpentry work at Stanway House and helped build a cricket pavillion there. I got out his memoir he wrote and have reread the bit he talks about his time there.

Hi Star

It must have been interesting to read about your Grandad's time at Stanway, and then see Stanway on tv.

I visited Liverpool in the summer and had found out beforehand that my G.Grandad and G.Uncle had worked as Stonemasons on the Cathedral there, I never knew them but when I went into the Cathedral i got very emotional, knowing people from my family had helped contribute to such a wonderful building.
