No it only appears to work if you have the icon on your desk top or the link in your favourites. And if I was to go to my favourites and click on a link while in GR, the new site would open over GR, so I click on the next tab and then the my favourites site to open.

Having said all that I do not know if it is possible to use tabbed shortuts with your type of links. In the case of sites appearing within threads on GR, you are correct, I also copy and paste the address into my address bar.

Hmm I wonder.
Edit. I copied the address into my address bar and opened the site. Then I right mouse clicked on the site and created a shortcut on my desktop. I clicked on the next tab then on the shortcut on the desktop. The site opened next to the GR site. I can switch between the two sites. Now it would be just as quick to click directly onto the icon on the desktop and open the site like that. But if you are working on two or three different sites it is worth having them next to each other so you can switch between them.

Good point. But one should be able to just click on the link and away you go.

Would that work if you saw this?

Joy. Last post about copying and pasting other site addresses. I don't do that. I have some sort of tabs set up just below my address bar, directly beneath the File, Edit, View, Favorites, bar.

When I wish to go into Ancestry I just pull the GR screen down so I can see my desk top, double click on the Ancestry (or whichever) icon and it opens in the next tab.

This way I have a row of tabs of all the different sites across the top of the screen. When I wish to open a new one I just go to the next blank tab. As I work between the different sites I just click on whichever tab I need to use.

These are the instructions from the tab screen.

With tabs you can:
Use one Internet Explorer window to view all your webpages.
Open links in a background tab while viewing the page you're on.
Save and open multiple webpages at once by using favorites and home page tabs.

To get started:
Press the CTRL key while clicking links (or use the middle mouse button).
Click any tab with the middle mouse button to close it.
Press ALT+ENTER from the address bar or search box to open the result in a new tab.

Quite agree. In fact, the whole site is archaic; still awaiting the day hyperlinks will take us to another site instead of having to copy the site name and paste it :-)

Couple of days ago, someone sent me the usual 'I have opened my tree to you' message. Had a quick look. No-one there that I knew. PM'd her, and thanked her, but asked why she had opened it to me. She opened the PM. Result Zilch. No reply. On further inspection, I still do not know anyone on her tree, and I certainly never asked for it.
