I have the Coley/Cowley/Cawley (various spellings) family in the Oldbury area of Warwickshire/Worcestershire.

I know there were some Greens on the canals because they have cropped up when looking for my own Greens in census returns.

I carefully put Sussex into the search page and up comes a family in the Midlands. Good old Ancestry!

Hi, in one of my family members I have the Head as a Canal Worker - Bank Manager who I understand someone who used to ensure the Staffs canal ways were clear but I know little else about this and would be interested in the book you mentioned.

Also I have found part of the family that were born in Suffolk but in the Census results appeared in Staffordshire and I was wondering if this was by the canals though I cannot seem to find any thing to support this theory.

Any hints and tips or details of your book would be much appreciated.

Best regards

Christine

Ann, there are canal people on my in-laws part of my tree

Surnames are Hughes and Onions. Mainly based in Oldbury, (Tat Bank) one of their daughters was born in Earls Town (according to the 1901 and 1911) census.

We can't find any trace of her birth.

I would be really interested in knowing more about your book.

Hello Ann

My great great great grandparents were boat people. They were from Warwickshire and Shropshire but could have worked all over the country.

Their names were Edward Jones and Prudence Twigger and had one son and 6 daughters in the 1820's/30's

My late father in law (sorry this is nothing to do with canal people but the previous post) on his marriage certificate his address was given as lay by on A38. He was a road builder living in a van at the time.

My paternal Hampson family worked on the Bridgewater Canal in Lymm, Cheshire. As my family has lived in the Lymm area for generations they didn't move around much so I had no problem finding them on the census thank goodness.

On my 2x gt grandfather Job's death cert I found it quite amusing as it gives his address as The Canal Bank, Runcorn....no mention of any barge!

Hi All

Don't know if this is the right section to put this on, no doubt someone will tell me.

Looking for people with canal boat families in there trees.
Canal boatmen travelled the waterways of Birtain sometimes with family members but in a lot of cases families where living elsewhere, which makes it difficult to research.
Through this posting maybe possible to make a connection for someone.
I have a book of canal families that I have come accross whilst carrying out my research most are in the Staffordshire/Cheshire area if anyone is interested.
