Welcome back David - from one who often 'strays' :-)
So now Frank is no longer a spare part, the stock has been replenished.

We had just started watching a film I'd recorded, Carmel laying on the sofa after I helped her wash and set her hair before lunch. Next thing I know she's dozing off to sleep, so here I am catching up on things again.

Frank - did you ever hear of a disaster on the Underground during the war when 173 people were suffocated in a rush to take cover during what they thought was an air raid? I've just read it in this little book I've got and it says it was hushed up at the time so as not to cause further panic. Apparently, it was caused by a nearby anti aircraft rocket battery in action which the people thought was bombs falling.

I'm finding a lot of things out from this little book and I only picked it up by chance in a charity shop where they were selling three books for a pound. It explains to me now how in September 1939 my mother, brother and myself were evacuated off to Saint Osyth (near Clacton) until my Dad found a house away from our bomb damaged upstairs flat in Stratford E15 and sent for us to join him. apparently, where children were under school age, mothers went with their offspring. Fascinating stuff.

Today is turning out like yesterday, sunny start and turning grey after midday. I had some trousers etc out on the line from the washing machine this morning and I've just been out to get them in and found out it is just starting to rain. But then again, I found it quite cold out today when I went off to post a letter. We've even had the heating on a couple of times today.

Frank Report 13 Oct 2015 15:47

A bowl of fruit, that sounds a strange hair conditioner Gill. Is it Apples, pears, banana's, grapes in fact a FRUIT SALAD !!!!

The book I am reading is Arthurian Saga - The Crystal Maze. I am 25% through the first book of three. So I must persevere with it, even though it seems strange at times.

The clouds are really coming over now. I expect a downpour before Ros gets home. It's also turning a lot cooler.

I went to the garage freezer earlier to look for some fish. Couldn't find any, when I went to close the lid I caught my left hand under the lid, thought I had broken my fingers, but all I have done is split my knuckle on my second finger. I have a tissue wrapped round it at present as I am a "little bleeder" with the tablets I am on.

David How is Ellen getting on with her knees ?? I should have had one last year, but keep putting it off. But I think the time is approaching when I will have to get it done :-( :-( :-(

I can't find a Gammon Steak either, so I am not sure what I will have tonight. There are some Ribeye steaks, but I don't fancy that. I can see I will end up with a grill of sausages, bacon, mushrooms, tomato's and a couple of eggs.

I see we are pushing the pages up now 2,200. and still going.

Are you home from shopping Mel, and did you get the "BIG HOOKS" ????

Frank

Frank Report 13 Oct 2015 16:04

Missed you there Will,

No I didn't know about that disaster, so it must have been HUSH HSUH. for my big ears not to have heard about it.!!!!

How strange that I was evacuated to Bacup, in Lancs, under school age, I think I was just about coming up to 4 years old. All five of us we shipped off together . Our fate to be decided when we got there. Those days of my life will never be forgotten, and neither should they be. Thank the Lord that it hasn't happened again in our lives.

You're not much of a hairdresser, falling asleep on your client :-D :-D Hope you had a nice rest. You must have needed it.

Did you see the appearance of Harry on the Thread. He was from the East End, and now lives in Kettering, not far from our Jane. He only came on a couple of times. SO IF YOU ARE LOOKING IN HARRY, come back and JOIN US PLEASE.

Evening All
David that is good news that Ellens new knees are fine, but what a pity your poor old leg is still giving you trouble.I think you said a while back that there is nothing more that can be done(or I am wrong there?)

Yes Harry do come back and join us again. It was nice hearing your memories.

Oh Mel you have a bit of a dilemma now as whether to get another Dyson from them.if I was you I would take a chance. It does seem odd that nothing could be found wrong with your one isn't it :-S :-S

Ouch Frank that sounded very painful ..How are the fingers now.Stopped bleeding yet ?

Mandy I did smile when I read your post about Lacey's funny comment :-D :-D

Gill I think I do vaguely remember about the lost soldiers.I must have a google and see if I can find something. How frightening for your BIL and Sister and children.I can imagine such a thing would change anyone. It is a shame though that the marriage couldn't survive. You hear of this so often happening.

Well I think it has been cold today .There has been a nippy wind.I must get the washing in quickly before it gets too damp.
Southern Fried Chicken ,Rustic Chips and traybake Peppers,Mushrooms and Onions.

After several surgical operations and a biopsy and weeks on an IV drip the orthopaedic surgeon has said no more surgery. Two years ago one of his options was amputation. I'd then have been getting around on a prosthetic limb. For those unaware, the knee is as good as fused straight, will not bend. But With a stick I can walk on it, not far but I can walk.
Iv'e a PC and a TV and books, so I'm always doing something.
Last night I decided to come back on to Genes Reunited.
Keeps the cabin fever ay bay :-D

Back and all packed away. Fed the chickens and bantams and watered my three big troughs with the clematis and sweet peas in.

I got the hooks yesterday Frank. He has'nt used them yet. He has been fixing up another light on the front of the new shed and doing various other things while I was out.

They had the road closed off I usually go on to Bideford so I had to go all the way to Torrington and then on to Bideford that way. Annoying......... :-| :-| :-|

O its getting dark so I better go and feed the hogs and shut the chickens in.

Evening All,

More of the same today.....isn't retirement fun sometimes! :-S OH has dismantled all the downstairs big furniture for the skip........some with his sledge hammer, while I did a war dance on dozens of empty shoeboxes, shirt boxes etc to crush them down! We decided to take a car load of those to the tip as well as the dozens of tin biscuit tins as they were taking up so much space with everything else and we need room to bring the dismantled wardrobes down from upstairs. OH went to see a chap down the road from the house as he was interested in buying a reel winder that was with FIL's old cine camera. Anyway he ended up buying the lot, camera, films etc as well so probably got a bargain as we have no idea of the value, despite looking at some on ebay. Then we came home with another car load, stored it away in our garage, fetched washing in, jumped in the shower then sped off to see the film, Suffragette which we both enjoyed. Now we are both aching and shattered, so are having a day off tomorrow!! :-) OH has plenty of his work stuff to catch up on and there's plenty I need to do here.

It's good the shed will be ready for the winter now Mel. It's good the weather has held off for him to do the roof. I wouldn't be paying either with your hoover being under warranty. It can't be good if your leccy keeps tripping, so might it be your wiring? Does it happen wherever it is plugged in? You are doing well resisting temptation, so keep it up.

I had a chuckle at Lacey Mandy.....it's amazing what little ears pick up and remember!! lol.

You found an interesting little book there William, it's always worth popping in places to see what folk have handed in.

It's good Ellen's knees are doing well David and at least you are able to walk a little way. Do they use black cabs where you are? I know they do in the city near here. Maybe someone would just let you have a sit in a front seat to see how it is.

Frank, you must get through a few sticking plasters! That must really have hurt. OH is going to need some on his head soon, the way he keeps catching it........he never learns to duck far enough!! If I was nearer I'd be popping along to that exhibition too! :-)

I'm off to bed now so night night x

Jane Report 13 Oct 2015 20:47

LOL Ann ,I can just see you doing the war dance on all the boxes. Not so easy to do on the biscuit tins !!!!.You both must be totally exhausted with it all now.
I saw the clip for the film Suffragette and thought it looked good.We might get to see that one.
Good idea to have a day off tomorrow to catch up with your own things. That was good the man took all the 'film stuff'.You could have put it on Ebay but then still be stuck with it if no-one wanted to buy.

I bought a big tray today of mixed Violas so tomorrow will get them in the window box outside the back door.
Lewis is on at 9 but also the new series River at the same time.I fancy River but Chris wants to watch Lewis :-S.Whichever one I don't see tonight I will watch on catchup.

Fitz was telling me about a good programme on BBC4 called 'Servants'( I think that is what it's called). He said the first one last week was very interesting ,so I might have a look at that one.

Gillx Report 13 Oct 2015 22:22

Yes it was bad Jane, like I said he looked like a skeleton by the time he returned home. Apparently he wrote a book about it in 1997, I believe it's on Am*zon. My sister had left him by then and came to live with us, bringing her children with her.

I'd loved to have seen your war dance on the boxes Ann LOL. By the sounds of it you're going to end up with a garage full yourself by the time you've finished. That was lucky with the neighbour buying the cine camera stuff. I bet you've got your own personal parking space down the tip now, given the amount of times you've been there :-D Glad to hear you're having a day off tomorrow, it'll do you both good. I saw the advert for the suffragette's film, it looked good.

Sorry to hear your post didn't work Mel. I had a problem with Genes earlier something to do with the gateway, what ever that was. I just kept getting a message coming onto my screen, luckily it only lasted a few minutes then everything went back to normal, but it was very strange.

How interesting that little book sounds Will, it's nice when you find something good like that in charity shops isn't it?

So you've hurt yourself again Frank, really, you're not safe to be left alone. Hope it's feeling a bit better now. Please look after yourself.

Going to bed now so see you all tomorrow

Richard Mayfield was my BIL. Here is the soldiers story Jane. I didn't realise they had made a film. I know you Googled it but I forgot to tell you his name, sorry about that.

Sandra wanted to watch another programme so I'm still up. Going to bed shortly though.

Now I've signed as a standard member I notice I've 50 tokens.

Can someone remind me where I use them?

Frank

Frank Report 14 Oct 2015 10:45

Morning David and all, Evening Kim,

David I think they are for Family tree searches, if I am wrong I am sure Mel or Ann will correct me !!!

Yes I have used a few plasters, the split is on the knuckle , so every time you make a fist it opens and weeps. Also when you wash and dry your hands the plasters are knackered. Waterproof be bugger##.

That "little book" sounds a fountain of knowledge Will. It's strange what you can find in the Charity shops.

It's good you are having a day to yourselves Ann, A bit at a time, I would have loved to see you jumping on those boxes . I know we have Biscuits tine in the garage "Don't throw them away, they might come in handy" Yer right !!!!!

I see when Madam came back from shopping yesterday, she made a "few trips" down the drive way, I wonder how many trays of plants I will find when I got out there ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

Slight breeze here this morning, but lots of sunshine and blue sky's.

Off for my shower now.

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 14 Oct 2015 10:45

Morning you lot and evening Kim,

Hi David Are they tokens or credits David. If they are credits you can use them to look things up on the census etc on GR.

Lovely sunny morning here today and I slept till 20 past 10.!!!

Iv'e got the dentists tomorrow morning............................not looking forward to that so will see what she says when I get there.

I remember those soldiers getting lost years ago. I thought at the time what a terrible thing to happen. I seem to remember seeing great hillsides of tree and nothing else.

Washing machine is bashing away on a quick wash so I better get the basket ready to get it on the line. I also have a huge loadof ironing to do.

Also need to ring W**llacotts about the bill they sent me online for the £40 with someone elses name and address on it.

Gillx

Gillx Report 14 Oct 2015 11:23

Morning all

Yes it does sound like you have 50 credits David, so that should come in handy if you need to find anything for your tree. I think if you want to see, say for example, a birth record then Genes let you know how many credits it will use out of the 50 you have. Good luck, hope you find something interesting.

Yes Mel, it was a horrible time for our family, he was the second party to get out, I dread to think what might of happened if he wasn't an experienced rock climber. He was a completely different man when he returned home, which is understandable I suppose given what he'd been through. Unfortunately his change of personality was so bad it ended with the breakdown of my sister's marriage.

How strange that you have a bill for £40 with someone else's name and address on. I would contact the company if I was you. It makes you wonder though how such a mistake could of been made. That's how identity theft could start. I should imagine the people who the bill should of been sent to won't be to happy about it either.

It's pretty dull here with lots of clouds and no blue sky at all. I've just noticed online that we're going to get the worse winter weather for 50 years this year and there could be snow in Scotland in the next 10 days. Hope it's not to bad for you Fiona. Wrap up warm and keep safe, I've seen how bad the snow can get up there.

What an awkward place to have cut your hand Frank, have you tried the fabric plasters they tend to stay on better, although they do get wet, but soon dry and won't fall off all the time.
So Ros is busy planting more in the garden, does she ever stop? At least you'll have a lovely garden over the winter now. What did she buy, anything nice?

How are you getting on with your little book Will, anymore interesting stories to pass onto us all?

I hope you enjoy your day off today Ann, have you got anything planned for the day? It'll do you good to have some quality time with Gordon, enjoy it before you have to go back to all the sorting again.

I'm having to use my dryer to dry my washing, it's just stopped so I'd better go and put in another load.
