Mel Fairy Godmother Report 20 Jul 2016 19:48

Hav'nt read Dermot's post yet but just to let you all know I took the crate down to Loraine's and she gave me the girls there and then so they are still in the crate at the mo waiting for the time when they can be shut in for the night. Oh said he will finish the fence off in the morning before I am up. He gets up about 5am or 6am.

She did offer me a free one but I declined as I only have them in the smaller house now as its easier for me to clean out. Only one barrowfull instead of 2 and a half to dump. No dought there will be a few more visists to Mole Valley for food for them now I have more.

Cooking sheep sh*t pie.

:-D :-D Dermot...I think you did mention that you were 'hair challenged'.Not sure if that it the right description. You know what I mean.
I would rather have a bald headed leader than a Bleached blonde ,bleached toothed(Trump).I actually think a shaved or naturally bald head is quite attractive on a man. Everyone is different today whether it is hair /no hair .Botox ,boob job, nose, face lift etc etc.. If they are confident and happy in them selves then great.
Still not sure about Trump though LOL

We've had thunder and lightning this evening with some big spots of rain which didn't last long but it seems to have cooled the air ,so its nice sitting outside but still muggy and warm indoors.

Oh so you have your girls already ,they will be pecking about tomorrow when you let them out , hope you can get a photo I'd like to see them.

Some of them have bald patches. We lifted the crate on its side as the hole lined up with the pop hole in the chicken house and propped it up and left them to it. Two had gone in and were up on the perch when I went round just before it was dark and there was still 4 huddled in the crate. I pushed them into the house and closed the pop hole.

When I looked in the door and shone the torch in they were still in a huddle in the corner by the pop hole. I hope they settle more tomorrow. I shall be round there watching them all the time to make sure they are alright.

Smashed two fingernails today seeing to youk now who. So I better have an egg tomorrow.

I forgot to say that Gill's hubby has a week and a bit off so I expect they are getting on with the garden.

Saying night night now.

At least it is cooler here tonight.

Dermot Report 21 Jul 2016 07:35

It’s probably all Michael O’Leary’s fault – or Richard Branson’s – but the undeniable truth is that the humble tie just isn’t what it used to be.

Roll back the years to a Sunday morning in any Irish town or village of my youth and you’d be hard-pressed to find a self-respecting man without one; the notion of heading off to church in an open neck shirt was as unthinkable as going without your trousers.

And it wasn’t just formal occasions that warranted a tie either – every fellow who ever bought a ticket for the 'Ballroom of Romance' had a suit and tie on, if only to keep them standing up straight after six hours in the pub.

Manual workers who spent all week in casual shirts or tee-shirts would dig out the good suit for these occasions – or at the very least put on a clean shirt and tie. And they wore them with a shirt fully buttoned to the top, even if they then opted for a v-neck jumper instead of a jacket – in either eventuality there was no place for your loosely knotted versions with casual shirts.

You didn’t wear a tie on the golf course, but as soon as you entered the clubhouse, you’d better have one in your locker or you weren’t getting in for a drink in the ‘men only’ bar.

We had the wide kipper ties, the skinny leather ties, the paisley ones that blended perfectly into the exact same colour shirt, the white ties with the black shirts, the old school tie, the clip-on tie, the novelty tie – and the one that gathered the dropped bits of your dinner onto it like a food magnet.

Fathers get them for their birthdays, for Christmas and for Father’s Day – that’s presuming they’re sold out of aftershave and soap – and often the best use for them is as a makeshift rope for the three-legged race at the following year’s school sports.

There are many who believe it is square to wear a tie – or at the very least it is a symbol of suppression; a uniform for the working ‘wage slave’ to the point that triggered the phenomenon of casual days at the office or Dress Down Fridays, where you made a virtue of not wearing one.

Perhaps our great backbench revolutionaries took their lead from the Iranians who saw it as a decadent symbol of European oppression. Or maybe they’re mad fans of Ikea, where the wearing of ties is actually banned – presumably on the basis that you could be trapped under a pallet of flat-pack wardrobes if it got caught up in the low-loader.

Morning Liz, Good morning All, Evening Kim,

Dermot I so enjoy reading your posts. Like you I never went anywhere at the weekend with out wearing a suit, shirt and tie. I would press my trouser every Saturday afternoon before going to the local dance in the evening.

In the FIFTIES when working in a City office, nobody removed their jacket what ever the weather. I do remember one very hot day when the Managing Director came into the main office and said "Gentlemen you may remove your jackets"

No Jane, we didn't get any thunder or rain, over this way. I was able to sit out on the patio with my cold beers until quite late, it was nice and cool. I was in bed before 11.00 pm and slept on top of the bed till 5.30 am. I was up by 7.00 to let JJ out, He wandered around the garden and came back in around 8.00.

I have found that this stabbing pain is better when lying down. Ros said you don't scream out at all in the night. But as I sit here now, every so often I get the pain and let out a yelp.

Good on you Mel, taking those 6 hens, lets hope they produce for you. It must cost you a small fortune feeding and caring for them. Bless you <3 <3

Ann that must have been one hell of an evening for Gordon, what a long and tiring day he must have had.

It's a little cooler here today, and with all the doors and windows open there is a nice breeze blowing through.

Ros will be pleased this evening as it's choir practice in the church. It's always very cool in there. Earlier in the year she was going down there wrapped up as though she was going to the artic. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Mandy, How come if that bloke has been around the church yard for the passed year, that you haven't seen him before ?? It seems that if he talks about religion all the time, he might be an Ex minister ?? I am getting quite interested now. You will have to put on your SHERLOCK HOLMES hat and start asking more questions .

JJ decided to try to destroy one of Ros's plants in the night. When I came out this morning there were shredded leaves all over the carpet. So I gave him a stern talking to. :-( :-( :-( He then came and laid by my feet, looking up at me. <3 <3 <3

Ros is sitting here in her nightdress, sewing the little quilts for the babies. She's made about 15 again this month.

Just getting nagged at by Madam. When I go to bed I put my left arm between the pillows, and I push her pillows over to her side. Which leaves my a nice space to lay my arm. She has just noticed it, while making the bed.

She is now nagging me about my exercise, I haven't done them yet this morning. So had better get on with them NOW
:-D :-D :-D :-D

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 21 Jul 2016 11:50

Morning all,

I have had a job getting on here this morning. I kept trying and it just would'nt connect so I did all the daily challenges and sorted the chickens out and tried again.

They (the newbys) had knocked over the water drinker in the house I left in there and there was water all over the clean shavings. The 6 new girls were three to a nest box (there's only two nest in this house) and rather crowded and then one came out who was immediately attacked by one of the older ones, the darker one who befriended the one I lost a few weeks ago.

I collected four eggs and what looked like a large piece of bubblgum which was only soft shell. This is understandable with them being moved from the only place they have ever known and a very bumpy car ride home over their very stoney uneven road down to the main road to home.

I took out the water container and came back to the bungalow for a nice can of cool clean water to fill the outside drinker. By this time a few more had ventured out into the run. There was still one hiding in the nest box so I peeped in and low and behold another EGG. So they have all performed today unless one of the old hens had decided not to be left out and she laid an egg.

They seem to like to eat the grass in the run but had'nt touched the food I left in the house overnight. They are probably used to mash which I don't feed as I find pellets much cleaner. They'll get used to it in a day or two. They like t he corn I gave them last night whilst in their crate and usually they don't know what that is when I first get them. They certainly don't know what a hot mash is as they have never had one in their lives so far.

Anyway apart from all that it is much much cooler here today and started raining steadily and quite lightly about a quarter of an hour ago. So rain has stopped play.

I have stripped the bed too. O well it will give me something to do making it up again but I won't get it dry if the rain carries on.

Frank Report 21 Jul 2016 15:20

I bet you are all enjoying the cooler weather.

I haven't had any PAIN for the passed HALF HOUR. So I am holding my breath and hoping it's gone away. For whatever reason, I am happy at the moment.

Mel you must be chuffed having all those eggs this morning. You made me smile about the old girl getting in on the act. <3 <3 <3

My friend who lives in Kettering (Jane knows who he is) His daughter lives in Colorado. Yesterday evening (may have been Tuesday) Her husband and children (teenagers) were out playing golf When there was a lightning strike. It set light to a young chap following behind their group. His two friends ran off to get water to put his cloths out, while they were gone Joanne's husband and children went to his assistance. The daughter gave mouth to mouth while they waited for the medics. They took him to hospital, but this morning they heard that he had passed away. The medics praised the family for their prompt action, which certainly helped for his family to be with him when he passed away. What a terrible thing to happen to a family out enjoying a pleasant evening.

Spag. Bol . tonight, Made it all this morning, just got to boil the spag. and warm through the Bol.

Ros is off to Choir practise tonight. Not sure if Valerie next door will want to go. She hasn't been good the pass couple of days.

If it wasn't for Liz, Mel and myself. There hasn't been anyone on here. WHERE ARE YOU ???

Jane

Jane Report 21 Jul 2016 17:23

Evening All
I have had a bit of a day catching up on a bit of cleaning as it was a little cooler. Now it feels all humid again :-S

God Frank, what a terrible thing to happen to that young man.Well done to your friends daughter and boys for trying their best to keep him alive until the medics arrived.Such a sad ending :-(
I wonder if it is a stone you had had and it has finally moved .You might pass it at some point when you have a wee.

Mel you had plenty of eggs didn't you !!.I hope that will all soon settle nicely and get used to their new home and food.

Dermot ties are a no no in this house unless needed for a wedding funeral or important meeting.OH gave up wearing ties at work several years before he retired. He got rid of over 100 !!!!!..Now when he has to wear one he feels like he is being strangled lol
I have a feeling that hospital Doctors might not wear ties (bow ties yes) ..Ties carry germs.

I see Chris has left Thomas tied to a chair on the patio.I best go and make sure he isn't trying to get out of the harness !!...Oh it's ok he is back :-D

You know that wet and forget stuff some of us have used on the patios and paving.Well we have for a Wet and Forget for Showers now.So I have spent an age giving our shower cubicle a good cleaning today and Chris has just sprayed it with the new W&Forget.i think it says to use it just once a week. Anyone else have this?

I was in Tesco this morning and there were so many young children with Grandparents. All being treated to sweeties :-D.First day of the school holidays here today.

Chris is off to London tomorrow to meet Hannah .I'll drop him off at the station at 1pm and then I am going to Fitz's for lunch.

Phew I am very sticky.I think it might be a bit cooler outside.

magpie Report 21 Jul 2016 18:03

At last it's rained! so no watering here tonight. Much fresher so we've got the doors and windows shut and both got long sleeved tops on as its quite chilly! Last night we had a blanket on the bed on top of the duvet, again it felt chilly!
Cas's water trough has been put away for the time being as she's rushing about in the long wet grass of our paddock, so she's wet enough! Her supper has been the remains of our corned beef! I grate it up for her and she loves it!
No ties in this house either except for weddings or funerals, son's the same!!
We had lunch at lunch time today, so just toasted sandwiches for us tonight!

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 21 Jul 2016 18:22

I had'nt heard of the Wet and Forgot for showers Jane? Where did you get it?

Just been ironing and got hot so thought I would try and get on here again. I had trouble again after lunch and could'nt get on.

Two old girls rushing from one feeder to the next trying to keep the youngsters off the food claiming it ALL for themselves when they don't really want it. They are just like a load of children. I don't know if I am going to get the new ones back in the house tonight as the old ones keep pecking them.

Only a clip on black tie here and a nice navy one I bought him some years ago. He has about three in all I think. I remember going to a wedding and my son bought a thin red leather tie for that but that was years ago.

Have any of you had trouble getting on here today?

Hope Anne gets her internet sorted soon as we hav'nt heard from her for a while.

Liz I bet Merlin likes it now it is cooler. Do you hose him down when its really hot?

magpie

magpie Report 21 Jul 2016 19:19

No Mel, we just spray him for flies and apart from that we put him out first thing and he usually goes off into the field barn. He doesn't seem too bothered by the heat, Exmoors are such tough ponies, nothing seems to faze them! We bring him back down to the yard by middle day and he wanders in and out of his stable so he stays pretty cool even when it's very hot.
OH made the sandwiches this evening and they were very good!

Jane

Jane Report 21 Jul 2016 20:04

Well it sounds like ties are something of the past now.I have to say I never see them in M&S these days or anywhere else come to that . Times are a changing.

Mel, Chris got the Wet and Forget Shower on line .So you might have to google it.It certainly isn't cheap,so I hope it works. He got a special deal with 25% off when buying that with the Normal Wet and Forget.

Liz you were lucky to have had a bit of rain.I wish we had had some .We really need it now.Everything in the garden is just sooooo dry.Even watering with the hose doesn't seem to make a big difference.
I can't believe Liz you had to have a blanket on top of your Duvet last night. We were both sleeping in the nuddy

Mel tell your old girls to be kind and not bully the new ones.I suppose they think they are invading their space .
I had a bit of trouble with the internet this morning Mel.But it seems fine now :-D

One of the fans has a horrible squeek as it oscillates !!! ..It is the one I have in the bedroom :-S. I think a bit of WD40 is needed. I am surprised the fans haven't burned out by now. What did we do in days gone by with NO FANS????? or Air Con.

magpie

magpie Report 21 Jul 2016 22:26

We sleep in the nuddy too Jane, summer and winter!! But we've got a blanket on again tonight as its quite chilly ! We haven't got any fans as we never seem to need one! I definitely wouldn't want one on at night, the noise would certainly keep us awake!! We don't use the air con in the car either! Just open the windows!!
We're in bed, watching the gloomy news!!!

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 21 Jul 2016 23:21

I don't use the air con in the car either I don't like the smell of it and at the mo mine is not working anyway and I am not paying to have new gas put in it. I did on the old rover but as I said I did'nt like the smell of it.

We are sleeping with a 4.5 tog quilt and there's nothing to it really.

magpie

magpie Report 22 Jul 2016 08:30

We've never put the air con on in the car not even to try it! just open all the windows like we always have!! Our summer duvet is the same tog as yours Mel the winter one is much thicker. If it's really cold in the winter we use them both! now that's really snuggly!!
Nice morning here, but breakfast indoors today! Nothing planned so see how the day pans out!

Morning Liz and all,

Broken egg in the house this morning and two in the nest boxes. Old hens still chasing them off the food containers but they can't be at all of them all of the time.

Skies just starting to clear a bit and the suns coming out a bit.

Started typing this and then did toast for us both and now I am eating it.

Oh is watching the qualifying for tomorrows GP.

Morning All

My air con in the car is on ALL the time...I have a feeling that Ann is the same.I just can't be without it now after having a/c for years. When I change a car the first thing I do is check that it has it.Just a sheet over us last night and of course the fan on too :-D

The noise doesn't bother us as we have just got used to it now.

Well it is a very overcast morning here.I think the sun will come out later.

How are the new family this morning Mel ?
