Mel Fairy Godmother Report 6 May 2026 10:37

Morning all,

Bit of a grey morning here today and its 11 degrees and to expect 4 rainy days starting Saturday. I hope they're wrong as I want more nice dry days please.

Up at 6am something and went back to bed and slept again till 10am. It must have been all the walking round Holsworthy yesterday and the drive there and back, must have worn me out.

Enjoy your trip out tomorrow Vera.

I hope if you send for the sandals they help with your foot problem.

My son contacted me this evening abd said they want me to go and stay for another week end of July/beginning of august. I must have been a good guest, worthy of a re-visit. :-D

We had a short shower of rain earlier this evening but otherwise it has been dry all day. When I went to the chiropodist it was really warm but it seems to have got much colder this evening. My chiropodist isn't cheap but she's very good and highly qualified. I've always had wide feet but over the last year or two they have broadened and flattened quite a lot. Even with a toe prop on one foot I was getting a corn underneath the top of a toe so she has made me a different sort of prop to try and has cut a toe separator I have on the other foot to a better shape to fit me. I already have wide fitting shoes but she said I really need specialist ones that are more adjustable and gave me a catalogue. I thought they might be horrible but times have changed and there are some nice designs. She showed me a pair of sandals that she thought would be perfect for me and I really liked them so I might be sending for them to see how I get on.

I didn't go to Ladies Club tonight. I had a text to say the speaker had dropped out so it was going to be an evening of chatting and card/board games. It's quite a big group and can be a bit "cliquey". None of my particular group were going and I didn't fancy going on my own so I've given it a miss.

Annx, I do check my spam folder at least once a day now. Should I have received an email from you? If so, I haven't got it yet. That's good that the firemen managed to prevent that thatch from catching alight or there could have been a really bad blaze.

I must go and sort out what we need for tomorrow as we have to leave about 8 am and I don't want to be dashing about in the morning. Sleep well and have a good day tomorrow whatever you are doing.

Emmerdale. I know you watch it Mandy. That speech spoke. By ‘Bear’ was beautifully written and spoken and so true. It should be printed out I. Newspapers against modern slavery.

I saw Laburnum out today too handing over the road just outside Holsworthy. The hedgerows are all bluebells, red campion, a little white flower new ferns, cow parsley and something else. My Rhodo's out on the front lawn too and my bearded iris in the border.

Afternoon All,

A dull start today, but the sun tried to come out. I pop to the shop most days as you know. Well I couldn't believe it that yesterday we went to Sainsbury's for OH's suit and got our shopping there instead and last night OH had read that there was a fire at the thatched, Tithe Barn nearly opposite the Co-op I use and at the time I am often there. No-one was hurt and it is said to have been accidental and in a wooden shed behind the barn. Because of the thatch, a few fire engines came and managed to stop the thatch catching fire, so that was lucky. It was made into a restaurant a few years ago.

I've got self set foxgloves and granny's bonnets popping up and a few self set lavender in the gravel I might pot up Mel.

While I remember, Vera you will need to check your spam to see my latest email. Your trip out tomorrow should be nice with so many flowers blooming now. Many seem earlier this year and I spotted Laburnum in flower today.

It's good getting your roof fully sorted Ann. We can't always see what's happening until damage is caused and money spent that gives you peace of mind is well worth it. You know you won't be overcharged by someone you know as well. I've been out sprinkling some salt on a patch of weeds in the gravel to test it out on some of the weeds. A friend who has dogs and can't use weedkillers says it works on dandelions so I'll see. I'm experimenting on a few types of weeds in one corner! I think Alan Titchmarsh recommends pushing a dutch hoe just below the surface of the gravel, but that could set my back off!

OH has gone to somewhere near Matlock over 40 miles away to a match with his friend, so I will do a few jobs now with some music on.

You've done a lot today Anng. I have been into Holsworthy with the return parcel and it went off ok so Iv'e learnt something today.

I took back two library books but I could'nt get the return bin open but just left them inside under the lid, hope they will be ok.Library is not open today but will be tomorrow as its market day.

Popped in the co-op and got myself myoffee and walnut cake which was subbed today for iced madera which I am not keen on. Also bought a couple of small pork pies for tomorrows lunch with a bit of salad.

Mince, mash carrots and cabbage tonight with fresh pineapple for sweet.

Its beautiful out with plenty of sunshine. I think I will now go down the shed and do some more sowing. My courgettes are up now I just need some more long beans as onlky two came up out of 12!!

Just knocked a chunk out of one of my fingernails so I better see to that.

Yes Mel z y th has seen the photos. I don’t remember but she may well have had hers done sometime in the past. There is an extension on their house about twenty years old.

I have sieved the last useable bit of the compost in the composter, earthed up the potatoes, although can’ do a lot with that as they are not in open ground. I have also sorted out the wall place that takes three tomatoes, filled it with compost and potted on three seedlings that have grown quite big. I have also sprayed weeds I. The grave.(lots of them). And made an appointment with hearing services for Thursday as one of my aids has stopped working.

Its just a thought but have you showed Cynth yur photos as maybe her house is the same?

Suns shining here now and the pump to go back has been delivered I just have to work out what to do with it next. I have the labels but think I have to put a note inside it which means I shall have to open the box.

Goodness Ann, what a good job the men took some photos so you could see what needs to be done. As you say it's worrying to think you could have gone on not knowing about it. It looks a bit of a job but perhaps it's not as bad as it looks and it's good that Jake and his Dad will move their work around to get it done quickly for you. I hope it doesn't prove to be very expensive - I always think of Frank and his MORE EXPENSE whenever something like this crops up. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the rain holds off for a few days longer.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 5 May 2026 13:09

Well I have seen the photos, worrying that I could have gone on not knowing what was happening up there And hopefully they can do it this week by shifting some jobs around.

Good morning Ann and all

It’s bright but not very warm yet. That’s strange you were dreaming about an exam Ann as I have a recurring dream that I am panicking because I haven’t prepared for an exam and can’t answer anything. It must mean something I suppose but I’m not sure what.

I’ve got to shower and hair wash before going to the chiropodist this morning and I’ve got a Ladies Club meeting this evening. This afternoon I must do a few jobs as we are out for the whole of tomorrow. We are going on a coach trip to Polesden Lacey. We have been there before but some years ago.

I’ve been awake since 5.30 and up since 7 am so I had better have breakfast and shower. Have a good day. everyone.

Morning Anng and all,

Grey morning here and its 11 degrees and pc says partly sunny so we can only hope they're right and we do get some sun today.

I have two subs on the shopping today my square crumpets and my coffee and walnut cake, they have sent me two iced maderia coffee loaf cakes instead which will be going back.

Hope you others slept well and that was a strange dream Anng. I wonder what brought that on?

AnninGlos Report 5 May 2026 07:50

Good morning all. I slept OK but kept dreaming a lot. one dream I was preparing for and sitting an exam. No idea what for but it was so difficult I couldn't even answer the first question. Then I woke up.

7 degrees white sky but quite bright.

I have Jake and Rory coming round today to check the remaining parts of my rook. (They only did the widest bits now have the two 'Pointed sides to do. or at least to look at and estimate.

That'll be nice Annx. Em called in with my Plenty rolls as I can't get them in Asda now and I like those as if one gets up my sleeve and I miss it and it goes in the wash they don't come apart and as they are washed they geet used for my plaster work cleaning out the mixing bowl.

I did have a go at the thistles as I have two kind well three with the ordinary thistles but these others are thugs. One came from over the field behind me and they are all in the back lawn but managable when its mowed but if they come up other places they can be 5 foot high if I miss them. The other one is like the Scotish Thistle which I leant the other day you can eat the roots of but I would'nt try it.It has beautiful big mauve flowers but loads of floating fairy seeds. Did a bit of weeding along the side of the sunflower garage and I have a double grannies bonnets coming up there self sown and some calendulars loads of foxgloves and a small shrubby thing so its looking quite good and I want to put some ox eyed daisies there too. A proper little wild garden.

Had something in the rabbit trap but it was'nt a rabbit it was a rat so I went and shot it tipped it out and the next thing was the Raven was eating it.....yuk. :-S

Just looked up the garden and there's two of them up there now so it won't be around long.

Annx Report 4 May 2026 18:42

Afternoon All,

Yes it's been quite dull here too and cooler with a breeze. We popped out for a Costa coffee and egg bap first, then across to Sainsbury's opposite to collect OH's suit from Timsons, but they were shut, so we did a bit of shopping as I needed shampoo, cottage cheese and coleslaw. As we were heading out OH noticed Timsons were now open, so went and collected his suit, so that was lucky he'd noticed them having opened. After we'd come home and put things away we went to the little spinney near where I used to live and walked through and across the old railway (now a walking/cycling track) and to the canal and locks a few minutes further. It was lovely to see the bright greens and white Hawthorn blossom and hear the birdsong, but it was a bit uphill coming back, so my knees needed a good rest after.

We saw the two bunnies in the garden again when we got home and OH said he thought he'd seen rabbit droppings in our sagging, old shed the other day, so I went to look. It was rat droppings, so we must get the shed cleared soon and see where they've been getting in. The neighbour that side has gone over the top feeding the birds with a bird table and years ago George, the neighbour that was the other side of us then, soon stopped using a bird table after seeing rats on his. The shed has been undisturbed for ages and we plan to replace it as part of redoing the back garden.

It sounds like everything's ok with your ex grandaughter in law AnnG and it was good to speak to her. I bet you feel better today for a good sleep and that the garden side is tidier with your efforts today. I was too tired to do any gardening so the bin has gone out for collection half full this week. It is a bigger bin though, so still plenty of twigs and weeds gone.

Yes I seem back to normal and feeling better now thank you Mandy so expect it was one of the bugs going round like you have heard too. Well done getting your runners planted. They will be up the poles before you know it! I'm in two minds about planting any now till we can shut out Bugs Bunney and his pal! :-D It sounds like you are almost ready for summer with the canopy in place now and benches ordered. That was good your son found a better deal on some for you. That £40 is better in your pocket for something else.

Mel we have some of those prickly thistles in the front garden to dig out. The ones we have make deep roots, so I ought to tackle them soon. I know the big Poppies don't last long but they really give a pop of colour don't they. I think some things are flowering early here this year. I noticed the purple Verbascums were flowering this morning and wondered whether you had had any luck with the seeds I sent you?

We are the same as you about going out on Bank Holidays Vera unless it is somewhere few would want to go. Neither of us enjoy crawling in traffic or queuing to go in places or for toilets and it's worse with the extra people these days. I hope you got a few tasks completed and enjoyed some rest too.

I'll see if I can send a few pics of our little walk now.

Ah the sun is coming through at last, just faintly. I have just picked some roses for a vase, it is not often I can do that but they are all coming into flower at once.
