Good morning all sunny here again so far. All being well Trebah garden this morningBB!

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 2 Oct 2022 19:20

Bonython sounded familiar when Ann mentioned it and sure enough, that was one of the gardens we visited. The other one was Enys. We were there in July and I remember there was hardly anyone about and at one of them we had to make our own tea in a sort of hut and put our money in an honesty box.

I knew that I had mentioned those gardens on Genes at the time but couldn't think where till I thought of the garden thread that several of us posted on regularly and sure enough I found them on there. I did look first at the photos OH had put on the computer from that holiday but he hadn't captioned any of the pictures, so that wasn't a lot of help.

Ann, we use the eco setting on the dishwasher most of the time. I'm not sure how it is eco as the programme takes longer than any of the others but it supposedly uses less water and less electricity. .

Annx Report 2 Oct 2022 18:51

I know Vera, and just when I thought I would be saving electric too! It's been good looking throught the instruction book though as I have found ECO settings I didn't know about and which save power so that should help. I seem to have sussed the fan setting too as I used it today and the roast pots and chicken were great. I had trouble judging times when I tried it when we first had the cooker and cakes didn't come out well, so I hadn't used it again for the last 14 years! The book said that was a more economical setting too. I might find the dishwasher and washer books next and try the ECO settings on those! There's no stopping me now. :-) Mum had one of those range cookers when she had the home, but there is a lot to clean on them, so I would get someone in to do it. It's a shame it isn't level. I must look up some of your plants that I don't know. The Echinaceas I do know and are lovely and seem to have sturdy stems that don't need stakes.

That's good your jabs are done Gwyn. They seem to have got the system of jabs off to a fine art now.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 2 Oct 2022 18:42

Would the gardens have been Trebah and Glendurgan Vera. I have been to both before more than once but we do hope to go to both if the weather is ok.

SuffolkVera Report 2 Oct 2022 18:21

Oh what a horrid time you are having Mandy. It is difficult sleeping in a chair but hopefully you will get a better night tonight. You seem to be coping well so far with the adjustments you are making. Let the family run around after you for a change, though I can well understand that it's frustrating for you not to do things yourself when you are used to being so active. Chelsea's a good girl to come and give you a hand. It's lucky that you have family nearby. I hope you make a quick recovery.

What a performance you had with your cooker cleaning Ann, using a double ration of electricity when we're all trying to cut back. As you say, at least it is spotless now. My cooker could do with a thorough clean. I used to keep the hob clean and every so often OH would do the oven but last time it needed a thorough clean we got someone in. I think we'll do that again. I really dislike this cooker which came with the house. It's a big range style cooker with a gas hob and two electric ovens. Although it's not noticeable till you start cooking on it, it actually slopes both backward and to the right. I think it's the floor that slopes but when OH adjusted the feet on the cooker so that it was even, the front fascia board wouln't fit on. Every time I have a moan OH suggests we buy a new one but I feel I can't justify the expense while I can turn out decent meals and cakes on the existing one. I've learnt through experience when to turn tins round in the oven and how to position things if I can't turn them.

I hope the rain stopped for you AnnG and you were able to get out. We were in Cornwall in summer 2018, staying just outside Falmouth and discovered a couple of lovely gardens and, for the life of me, I can't remember the names of them. My memory for names is getting very bad lately. I have fond memories of that holiday in Cornwall. My brother was between operations and was well enough to come with us and we all spent a lovely day with my cousin and her daughter in Truro. Sadly, neither my brother nor my cousin are with us now but the memories of that Cornish holiday are happy ones.

I hope you are having no ill effects from your two jabs Gwyn. We are both having the Covid booster and flu jab next Saturday, one in each arm. We also go to our GP surgery and, like yours, the system always seems to work like clockwork.

I am still sorting things out here but I am nearly there. All sorts of things have been moved around. OH was not very good at finding things anyway but he's going to be hopeless now everything has moved. I only hope I can remember where I've put things. So far there are about 14 books, 6 pewter tankards, i china pot, 2 magazine holders and a silver plated rose bowl to go to the charity shop. There are also about 100 old copies of Family Tree magazine if they will take them. If not they will have to go to the tip next time we go.

OH has just called me to look where he has put some new plants in pots and if he's got them in the right place he'll plant them in the garden tomorrow. We took some not very good plants out and these are to replace them. He spent hours researching suitable plants and then I had to go through the list and say which I wanted. I had to be very tactful as I discounted ones that were the wrong colour for where we wanted them or they weren't hardy or only had a short spring blooming when we wanted summer into autumn, but I managed to agree some on his list. So he ordered 3 of a really pretty Echinacea which are a sort of light salmon pink with a yellowing centre, 3 of a deep pink Agastache (Hyssop) and just 1 Hylotelephium (I think that's a stonecrop). That has very dark leaves and a dark red flower. I also found something called Zuluzianskaya which I'd never heard of but it looked pretty and I thought it would be good in a pot. It needs winter protection so I thought it would be easier to cover a pot with fleece or even bring it into the conservatory.

As usual I am rabbiting on so I'd better wish you all good night. I hope you all, especially you Mandy, sleep well.

Its been a beautiful day here too Anng so I thought you would be ok today as its often nicer in Cornwall than here in north Devon. The barometer has risen so lets hope it stays this was for your week.

Chelsea gone home ,Katie coming now and will go to school from here

Not a lot of cooking done but dil has stocked the freezer and we're stocked with tin stuff we won't go hungry

Max is not coming near me but he is keeping an eye on me and follows me about the house when I stretch my legs don't think he's very keen on my slings
No walks just good run abouts with Chelsea in the garden

AnninGlos Report 2 Oct 2022 17:34

The rain stopped and it has been a beautiful day. We went to Trellissick garden and then on into Falmouth. I couldn’t believe after all the times I have been to Falmouth we ended up somewhere I had never been where we sat with a glass of wine in the sun on a pier and watched people and boats. Came home then and had the scones and jam and cream left by the owners for us. Jam first before you ask. :-D

Gwyn in Kent Report 2 Oct 2022 15:29

Mandy,
It sounds like you and your family are thinking up ways for you to manage, such as using straws and sleeping in your chair. It must be so difficult with both hands out of action, but I hope that as you heal, you will adjust to sleeping and at least get more rest.
I could sleep anywhere, as long as I wasn't in pain.
I hadn't thought about the danger of the stairs and you certainly don't want more tumbles, :-0
I hope you heal quickly.
Has anyone suggested taking calcium tablets?
I know my OH took them when he broke his leg.
Medical opinions change though and it might depend on any other meds. you take.
He never had milk in his drinks, on cereal or ate yoghurt, so had limited amount of calcium in his normal diet.

Went for my covid booster this morning. The centre just happens to be my own GP's surgery, so very convenient and they have it down to a fine art. If I was in the building for more than 3 minutes, I'd be surprised... In one door, visit nurse, whose colleague enters details to my computer records, then out the other door at the far end of the building. With so many consulting rooms being used, people were coming from far and wide and being vaccinated in no time.
Yesterday I had my flu jab there, so that's me sorted for a while. :-)

I hope the weather has enabled you to get out and about in Cornwall , AnnG. It's always a job to judge what the weather might be.
Can be really lovely and quite warm though.
It was grim here earlier, when I had to go out, - cold and wet, but now we have brilliant sunshine and it's warmed up considerably.

O Mandy I hope you get a better night soon in your chair. Whose doing the cooking? I hope you have ready meals in the freezer and something that dos'nt need cutting up but I suppose Colin could do that for you. I do hope you heal quickly as you must be so frustrated not being able to do everyday things.

Annx Report 2 Oct 2022 14:31

Oh I missed you there Mandy as I forgot to send my post till later with watching lunch.

What a pickle you are in with not able to use either hand for much. Good idea to sleep in your chair though and it may seem more comfy tonight as you get a bit more used to it. I expect Max was liking the company. Well done young Chelsea for coming to help out though. I bet she is a godsend too!

Morning All,

Suns been out all morning here....so much for OH telling me for 2 days that rain is forecast! I have put the washer on now as I think there's still time for the washing to dry.

The chicken should be ready in half an hour so a later lunch for us today. I didn't sleep till 3.00am ish so wasn't up very early this morning. I've already had to change some inks on the printer and photograph his driving licence and send it to his email so he can send it off as ID for some of his work. He's an expert at delegation.

I must finish my painting this afternoon so I can start on a butterfly to go with the other I did. I ought to do lots in the garden, but am not really in the mood. The Pigeons seem fascinated with the pile of ash from burning the paper and have even been sitting in it! I suppose its good camouflage!

Yes if I stumble it's my camera I think about AnnG! It was the same when I was age 15 and fell downstairs clutching my new big and heavy reel to reel tape recorder to my chest. It didn't do my back any good though! It's a shame you have rain, but maybe it won't be for long. Cornish showers tend to be heavy but short! It sounds as if it's peaceful where you are.

Morning Anng and all,

Hope Mandy had a reasonable night and managed some sleep she definately earned it with what she went through yesterday.

Grey and dark morning here and pc says rain to stop but I was'nt aware it was raining.

Anng are there still thatched properties in Mawnan Smith?

I think its a washing hair day today and I may give my feet a good soak.

AnninGlos Report 2 Oct 2022 08:09

Good morning all. Sounds horrific Mandy but as Ann and Mel said, good to hear from you.
It makes me realise how lucky I was in 2019 when I fell on holiday in Wales. I just ticked my ankle. With hindsight I of my arms were saved by the fact I rolled and automatically to protect me camera held my arms up. It is instinctive to put arms out when you fall. The pulling sounds horrid. Awful the long waits for ambulances these days, good that you were able to walk home and that your son was able to collect you. Also good he was able to contact us. And brownie points for sister and bil to take you to hospital.
I am sure you are very uncomfortable now and finding ways to do things will be tiring so I hope the next two weekd pass quickly for you. Don’t fight it just rest and the time will soon go.

It is raining here which was not a shock as that was the forecast. So a late start, no gardens and find something to do later. Luckily we all read so won’t be bored. This little barn construction was miles down a very long winding country lane with very few parking places. So going out and back will have to be once out stay out.

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 1 Oct 2022 22:40

Poot you Mandy but its so nice to hear from you. You take care and don't do anything silly two weeks will soon pass and then you will be in splints. Not the most comfortable of things to live with. So I expect either son or Colin is taking Max out. Is he gentle with you? They seem to know something is wrong and come and comfort you if they can. Mind he dos'nt jump up at you though.

Annx

Annx Report 1 Oct 2022 22:17

It's good to have heard from you Mandy and know you are ok if not exactly comfortable just yet. It is so easy to lose your footing and crossing a road you are watching the traffic. It must have been a shock to see the state of your poor wrists. What a wait it would have been for an ambulance though, so it was good your sister and BIL could take you to hospital. The pulling to straighten your wrists does sound agony and like when they put a joint back in it's socket! I thought it could be tricky to pull things up and down from my memory of the hospital research and needles in my hands, so a nightdress day was a good idea and I would have quite a few more! Anything to make it easier. So 2 weeks in plaster and then it should be a bit easier with the stitches out and splints. The time will soon pass so rest up and each day your swelling should get a bit less. Best wishes. <3

MillymollyAmanda Report 1 Oct 2022 20:27

Had to be at hospital by seven went to theatre about nine and woke recovery twenty to two so quite long op
Both arms plastered and in padded slings, fingers on left hand really swollen and more bruising coming on face
Had nightdress day as its easy for loo can't use fingers can't pull things up or down

Just lost my footing when crossing road and went down on side someone sat me and I could see left wrist was all twisted with huge lump other wrist bent to
Ambulance was going to be 3 hours so son came and picked up off ground and I walked home sister and bil took me to hospital was taken straight through and treated
My god the pulling was the worst pain ever even with the gas and air

These plaster casts are on for two weeks then I have stitches out and splints put on

Sorry hand aches now
