Mel Fairy Godmother Report 19 Jul 2022 10:53

Had to turn the pc off with the thunder about. We have more thunder now and rain the first lot was short and sharp but its a bit steadier now. It smells wonderful out. PC says rain coming and for Buckland Filleigh its 21 at the moment so much better. I wish it would come up to you lot to give you a breather.

Lots of subs today but two which will be going bak and thats Kale and some icecream cones as they are not my waffle ones and I have a box of the ordinary ones.

Still slept well but I did'nt go to bed till 2am.

I’m moving in with you Mel. Cloud and even a little bit of rain would feel like heaven. The highest temperature in the country yesterday was recorded in Suffolk. We haven’t had any rain for a while and there’s none forecast, at least not for the next 10 days. It’s 34 here at the moment and climbing.

Oh, I’m wanted on the phone. Bbl

It's 29 now.......that's enough for me and it's not 10.00am yet.

Didn't see you there Mandy. We were opening some windows and shutting the curtains before, as the sun moved round, but have closed both today like you to keep the heat out. The children round here broke up last week, so they are ok, but if they close some schools they will be thinking they have missed out on extra holiday! I agree it's too hot for children to be walking to and from school in this heat though, even with uniform rules relaxed. The older ones have so much to carry as well. I bet Max is enjoying his frozen Kongs! They sell doggie meals and icecream at some of the cafes round here now. The very thought of marmite icecream.....yuk!

Morning All,

Well I felt a bit badly last night with the heat so had a cool shower, got the fan out in the bedroom, a bowl of water with a new cloth in it for mopping me down placed on the bedside table and my chilled hot water bottle. I didn't need the fan in the end and the water bottle under my knees or placing the inside of my wrist on it helped a lot.Thyroid problems can cause difficulty with temperature regulation and for many years I have had difficulty warming up if I get really cold and vice versa so wasn't surprised. Now I have a wet cloth round the back of my neck like the chefs do in hot weather! lol. Later, if it's as hot as they predict here, my feet will be in a shallow humper of water.

Vera, we went out earlier and watered just the pots and greenhouse and it was already really warm. It says 27 already on the PC so it looks like they are right about it getting hotter today. Where Mel is looks to be a bit cooler. I would sleep downstairs too tonight if it's hot. If we get more of these heatwaves I will get some of those thin gel pads for the bed. I was looking on ebay last night and they don't need cooling or anything and can be folded away when not in use.

OH is doing some of his work he needs to catch up on now and I will sort some paperwork although the PC lets out heat. The binmen have been and the bins are back in place so that's good.

I wish I could get OH interested in a Kindle as it would save OH building a library of books! He still likes the feel and look of a book though and the change from looking at a screen and I can see his point.

Morning all,

So hot overnight the bedrooms were so hot I think I woke every hour ,usually I keep all curtains closed and leave windows open but today I'm going to close all the windows and the curtains to keep the heat out .
We're sitting out at the moment but you can feel it heating up already .
We can hear the little ones going past to school but I bet a lot will keep the children away ,its all right to have them in the air con classrooms all day but they must feel it when they have to walk home in all this heat, at three o'clock when they come out it's at its peak .

I did see where some of the shops in town closed at half two , no body came out in the heat .

Hope everyone can keep cool bbl

Your OH has had such a long wait to have his tooth fixed Ann. It’s about time it was done. I hope it will feel more comfortable after Thursday.

I think the temperature has gone down a degree or two though it’s still very hot. OH is outside watering. It’s still a bit sunny but the sun isn’t beating down directly on the garden now. Inside, the downstairs rooms aren’t too bad but it’s really hot upstairs. I’m sure I’ve said before that they are basically in the roof space so the heat rises and stops there. If it’s too hot to sleep upstairs tonight I’ll be coming down and trying one of the reclining chairs in the lounge for size.

We were supposed to be at a club meeting tonight. I had already decided that my head was too bad to put up with the heat and noise in the room but so many cried off that the secretary cancelled the meeting anyway.

AnnG, I have just finished a book called The Elephants of Norwich by Edward Marston. I suppose you’d call it a medieval crime story. I like crime and detection books and I like historical books and this combined the two. I’ve just borrowed on Libby another medieval mystery book by Paul Doherty. It’s a Brother Athelstan book and though I’ve read some books by this author I haven’t read any of that series. I’ve also got some unread books on my kindle, a Richard Osman book I bought for 50p at our coffee morning and the book granddaughter left for me to read, so plenty to keep me going :-)

it was 37 here but has dropped to 36 degrees now. Here in the study it is 28 degrees, but is a bit cooler in the bedrooms. I hope I sleep well again tonight in just my nightie. We have had blinds and curtains drawn everywhere most of the day and the windows are shut now till it hopefully cools a bit. I went out to the garage earlier to get an icecream and lollies, but came in after finding just the lollies as it was so hot. OH has just wheeled the bins out and said he couldn't get back inside quick enough. He said covering the car steering wheel with an old towel worked a treat in keeping it cooler. I took a bottle of chilled water to bed last night and will do the same tonight. I've also put a hot water bottle in the fridge like I've done with hot flushes. I can pop and fetch it if I wake up hot.

Mel your drink sounds nice and refreshing. I think I'd be sitting on some cool floor tiles if I thought I could get up easily again!

Vera the dentist said he will try and fill OH's broken tooth. He suggested tomorrow, but OH thought not with the heat so is going on thursday. OH saying how he's been waiting to see whether they or the hospital deal with it for over 2 years now seems to have surprised them into action. We think cheese he had last night triggered his migraine as it has before. Luckily with taking tablets for it and laying down for a while when he got back it soon went this time. It's good your OH has his results now and that things are stable and no worse. It's good they are keeping an eye on things too.

What are you reading Vera.

I have just started on The City of tears by Kate Moss. Sequel to The Burning Chambers which I think I read some time ago.

I am sitting here in the corner of the kitchen diner sipping ice cold Elderflower slimline tonic.

SuffolkVera

SuffolkVera Report 18 Jul 2022 16:29

It’s been 37 here for about 3 hours now and I don’t think it will get any hotter today but it’s not due to cool down till late evening and likely to be in the low twenties overnight, so it might be a sleepless night again.

How did OH get on at the dentist Ann? I hope his migraine has cleared. The heat and lack of sleep have given me a bad headache but thankfully not a real migraine or I would be flaked out.

My OH has at last got the results of his last MIR scan. He is stable and his problems haven’t got any worse which is good news, but they are still going to keep a close eye on him and will send him an appointment for blood tests and another scan in 3 months. As he is also waiting for a different scan from a different department I can see the next few months being a round of hospital visits again.

I’m a bit bored at the moment as it’s too hot for h/w or gardening. I have some computer work but it needs doing on the PC and our little study is way too hot to work in at the moment. Better read again I suppose

38 degrees here now son took me and granddaughter in to MK central shops. It was good as air con and front seats that are extra cold, car in multi storey in the shade then air con in most of the centre and shops. Just looked in M&S, had a coffee in Waterstones and a tray bake then came home. Bought a light seight Tee shirt that is all.

I used a couple of old darl patterned wraps that we use to use on holiday they are just thin cotton and we use to use them on the sunbeds on top of our towels ,I used mine to wrap round over my swim suit when we use to go for a drink round the pool ,I have lots of pretty ones in the draw .

Another 34 here too. OH started with a migraine but it seemed to be clearing a bit so he's gone to the dentist. I nipped out then as the African Marigolds were drooping in my big tub and I did the other pots near it. I nipped up to the greenhouse next to give the cues and toms extra water as the cues were wilting. Oh my the heat just hit me so I didn't hang about in there doing that and came back inside again quickly. The thermometer inside says 27 so seems much cooler!

Good idea to shade the chickens Mel and your greenhouse Mandy. I haven't got anything to use since my clearout in the Spring.

I haven't done anything else since Vera and we'll stay in till Wednesday now. It's forecast rain here then which would be good after this heat.

Oh oh OH is back!

MillymollyAmanda Report 18 Jul 2022 13:48

No Mel it was an old one but I can watch them again .

I just went out and hung an old throw over the front if the greenhouse to shade it a bit my goodness the heat out there now, just walking down to the shed and back was enough ,I also took my small hanging pots off the brackets and stood then on the table in the shade .

Mel Fairy Godmother

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 18 Jul 2022 12:42

I have tried to give the chickens a bit of shade by throwing an old duvet cover over the netting but I must go and check it as it is'nt tied down. Shall take some pegs with me and string. I may put the old garden table in there as they get the sun all day till late afternoon when the big oak tree shades it.

I only have 4 hens now as Daisey passed away the other week. One old one who actually laid and egg yesterday with a very thin shell so it broke. The other old one I had after Daisy and May is still laying now and then but that egg too gets broken but yesterday I had a whole one from her. The two new ones are laying well nd I get two eggs most days. Iv'e only had one this morning so far.

Mandy was that a new Yorkshire farm program? Our Yorkshire Farm??
