We have had over past 45 years several forms of heating, electric/oil/coke hopper and for past 20 years gas. Each and every one was serviced annually - I usually have them done October hoping that leaves us OK for winter. Basically I would be afraid on grounds of safety not to have them done. Relative has Housing Association house gas fired and boiler is serviced annually.

Hi Jean,
It's recommended that oil-fired boilers are serviced annually. If left, a small fault may become a big one - and therefore more expense to the Housing Association!
If yours needs necessary new parts, the longer they're left, the more likely it is that the boiler will need replacing.
Have you got a Carbon Monoxide detector?

Our boiler was serviced after a lot of nagging from me, six months after the due date, but the man didnt have the necessary new parts, would be back next week. $ months later am still waiting1 The housing association now tell me ther is no legal obligation to service oil-fired boilers yearly. Dont know how true that is.

Hi Dizzi, I have to make up hours too. We're allowed to accrue flexi-time, but only 4 hours - I have told my manager (who, like everyone else but us 6 admin can accrue 10 days) that 4 hours is as useful as a chocolate teapot!

Hi Sue, I live in a Council house - it's the firm the Council uses - hence my e-mail to them - they contracted the firm.
I don't pay directly for the service, it's included in the rent.

Hi Ann - that's very annoying. You'd think they'd get the facts first!

The council haven't replied to my e-mail yet.
I don't want to phone the firm, as it's not really the fault of the girl on the end of the phone!

I've got a few days leave left, but can't take another day off before Christmas.
I was thinking earlier, they used to service the boiler in February, and have slowly been making it earlier in the year. Iniitally they wanted to come round in November - which is a full 3 months earlier!!
As they've broken their contract, I may lie and say I have no more leave until March/April!

Ann, I bet that just made her day, I wonder what moron sent them there without the meter they were supposed to fit. The mind Boggles. **M**.

My daughter had a similar experiance.Electricity company wrote to her saying they needed to change her pre paid elec meter.She make all the arrangements ie day off, time etc. When the guy arrived he said 'oh we dont carry pre payment meters'!!! Was she mad or what.

Maggie, how are the council involved in this firm. Did they reccommend them to you?.
I find this sort of thing is happening more and more, these days. Its ok for them to mess people around, but if we dont keep appointment, there is usually a fine. i.e. dentist etc.,
Very one sided.
Problem is we are at the mercy of these people.
Pity you dont live near me, i could recommend an angel.!!!.

A neighbour's circulating pump packed up!
I loaned him the wrenches to do the job( I didnt want personally to get involved...)
they removed the pump, went off to get a new 'un. but unfortunately they induced a leak in the pipe that fed from the boiler......called in Brit- gas

seems that they now need a new boiler...........circa £3,600,

My son had the opposite happen, took a half day and the man was there before 8.30 am and gone by 9 or so - had my son realised he could have just said he would be in late and made up the time later on. He went back to bed lol

Took a days leave to get my boiler serviced.
bloke was due at 10am
11am I phoned up - was told he would be here by noon, or I could arrange another day. Replied that I didn't really want to take another days leave to hang around waiting, I would expect him at 12.
I went out at 3:15pm.
Got back home at about 4:45pm.
Sent snotty e-mail to the council, explaining that when I tried to find the firm online, their accounts had been suspended, and suggested they vetted their firms a bit better. (Also said that I expect the firm are behind because of the snow - but could have informed me earlier in the week that they intended to do the missed ones first and sod the rest of us)

Just realised I had a phone message from the firm advising me that their engineer couldn't make it!
That phone call would have been made between 3:15 and 4:45.
Why didn't the silly c*w tell me at 11am that he couldn't make it - then I could have gone to work this afternoon?
