Whilst reading a reply on the boards I have just read about someone giving 'short thrift' which I presumed should be 'short shrift'. But as I could be wrong I decided to look on the net. It appears quite a few people are giving short thrift but when I look at the item, there is no explaination to what they mean. Are there two meanings or is the wrong word creeping into the vocabulary. Another word I have read recently where a similar sounding word has been substituted on these boards and in a private document is 'gleaming' instead of 'gleaning'.
Where is Hilda Ogden and her muriel when you need her????

"…….. a masterpiece of errors & awkwardness, a crime against the English language".

(Don't know who said this but it suits the topic - I think.)

Not easy to say "short shrift" if you are tipsy!

Oh dear, sounds like something I said, short thrift.....! Short whatever, we used to call it the Bum's Rush when I was younger. Either way, up or down, I suspect most people get the point.

Now, try to say,

"The Shropshire Security Shredding Company"

Five times in quick succession....!

Or this one, IGP -

I'm not the pheasant plucker,
I'm the pheasant plucker's mate.
I'm only plucking pheasants
Cos the pheasant plucker's late!

Try that 5 times in quick succession when you're tipsy . . . . .

Yes, I know what you mean, PP.

I have occasionally used too many 'toos' too.

Shreeving was hearing the last confession of a condemned person.

I am off to rattle my bottles in Rollockses yard now.
