A really nice family lived two doors down from us yonks ago, who were gypsies.I didn't really know what that meant, only that they were such nice people. He was a 'rag & bone man', used to come around with his horse & cart, calling "old rags & lumber", which I didn't understand. If you gave old clothes, you would get a goldfish...never got one of course.Their house was magicical, lines hanging all over the place, with old clothes hanging on them.Thoroughly good people, I loved going into their house, they were very hospitable. When I came over to Holland, a man came around every friday evening for the veg. peelings, we had his 'snaps' ready of course.Shame that such colourful characters have gone! |

Gypsies were the original recyclers. Scrapyards have been quietly recycling metal for years and where would we be without them? Gypsies were usually the people whoo collected pig swill when it was legal to do so. |

I used to wait for the Rag and Bone man and would pester my mum for anything she could spare. We did get a few goldfish and one lived for several years. |

You might like to hear the sound of the rag and bone man, but not me. My dad kept his eye on the horses posterior and guess who had to go out with the bucket and spade to get manure - for marigolds!!! |

The local scrap yard has horses and they put a trailer full of manure outside for people to help themselves |
