Need your advice please on appropriate funeral hymns. My dear Mums funeral is next week and I did think I would like Jerusalem to be sung as its my favourite, mum didnt really one as such. I really not sure, what do you all think or can anyone please suggest any hymns you think would be lovely for a funeral. Thank You :-(

Another good hymn for a funeral is the "The Old Rugged Cross". I think Jerusalem is a great hymn and I am sure your dear Mum would have trusted your judgement. Was there a particular song that she did love as nowadays it is popular to include a recording of a much loved song making the service more personal? Funeral Directors and Vicars are so helpful with this sort of thing these days.

Whatever you choose I am sure you will do your Mum proud. I am very sorry for your loss and hope you find some strength and comfort in the coming week and months ahead.

Take care Lainey x

The Lord's My Shepherd and Abide with Me are very traditional hymns for funerals but, if your mum was a churchgoer, then the world is your oyster and you could browse through the hymnbook the church uses.

It may be better though, to take advice from the Vicar as some clergy do not allow Jerusalem to be sung in their church, despite it's popularity - best to check first.

Hope all goes well. Cx.

It's a difficult one isn't it.
For my father's funeral we didn't know what to choose either as we were unaware of his favourites - he seemed to know them ALL when Songs of Praise came on the telly!!!
But him being a very traditional English Englishman, so to speak, we decided Jerusalem and I Vow To Thee My Country would be appropriate, and then had Psalm 23 (the Lord is My Shepherd) as a reading by the most senior member of the family.

Sending my condolences for your loss....and sending you positive thoughts and good wishes, especially on the day of the funeral.

My condolences to you. My favourite is the beautiful 'Dear Lord and Father of Mankind' - it was sung at my wedding and I would like it to be sung at my funeral.

Best wishes, whatever you choose.

hi there, so sorry to hear of your mum's passing. When my best friend died 3 years ago we had "make me a channeller of thy peace." I just think the words are so comforting. when there is darkness, let there be light.

take care

I've been to 6 funerals this year, only one of them hasn't featured "Amazing Grace", most have had either "Jerusalem" or "The Old Rugged Cross. It's funny how, in this modern day and age, the old ones are still the most popular.

One hymn which I feel is very apt for a funeral, with veryappropriate words is "Oh Love That will Not Let Me Go"

Personally I want my funeral to be a happy occasion, no black ties or sombre faces. My only stipulation to my children re hymns/ music is that they play the "Match of the Day " theme when they wheel me in to the church

Deep respect on your Mother's passing.

My sympathies on your bereavement.

Jerusalem is very appropriate. You might like to browse here http://www.funeralhymnsheets.co.uk/optionshymns.html and reading some poems may help http://naturalendings.co.uk/funeral-poetry.asp
