The parents of a newborn baby left with horrific injuries and fractures all over her body walked free from court today, despite admitting child cruelty charges.
The unnamed infant was just 23 days old when doctors discovered she had suffered multiple breaks to her legs, knees, ribs, right wrist and right hip.
MRI scans showed the baby girl had also sustained a skull haemorrhage and trauma to her brain tissue.
But her parents were spared jail at Bristol Crown Court today, despite pleading guilty to child cruelty on the basis of neglect - because a judge blamed social services for the ordeal. .......

...am I the only one who wonders just what on earth the judge was on..and why on earth he made such a decision??????? maybe I'm missing something obvious?

Poor baby...I don't doubt mistakes were made by the powers that be..but surely the parents shouldn't get away scot free from this????

Unbelievable, It wasn't the Social Services who inflicted the injuries on the baby

'Assuming' that the learning difficulties of the parents were extreme enough to be such that any baby born to them was at great risk which seems to be what the social worker concluded ( because they were mentally incapable of caring properly rather than abusive) then it may be that there is no real point in a custodial sentence if they are unable to understand what they did wrong..

That is no excuse for the people who SHOULD have taken action though.

"The council said in a statement: 'This family received extensive support and guidance from North Somerset Council as we attempted to keep them all together."

Not good enough, if the social worker believed they were incapable of looking after the baby they should have had 24/7 in home support ( I won't say take the baby away without trying that because it is entirely possible that people with learning difficulties could have been taught to be good parents).

Very sad.

EDIT, to say I hope it goes without saying that were the parents fully aware of what they were doing (as so many who get off lightly are) , then I would string them up and chop bits off them!

Maybe I'm from another planet....but all I can think about is what that poor poor baby suffered at the hands of folk who brought her into the world.....at the very least an undertaking from the pair not to reproduce again would have been in order...but then I'm guessing that would go against THEIR human rights ....and to hell with the rights of a defenceless baby.

I really can't say anymore about this. :-(

Absolutely sickening,
reminds me of a patient of mine several yrs ago now, at the age of 9m her father had grabbed her by the legs and smashed her head against the wall
because she wouldnt stop crying, you can imagine what damage he caused.
that poor child lived until she was 5yrs old..

On this I agree with the judge social services are to part blame and heads should roll.....a warning signal was reported yet again never acted on soon enough and should have been pushed for action harder......!

and any more children born to these parents needs an at risk order before its born.which is very likely to happen now.as it appears they just cant take on any responsibility...

how many times does this have to happen,Harringay should have been the last we ever heard of !,,but it hasnt been or wont be till heads of departments are dealt with and shown there often isnt a tomorrow to look into things or conduct an investigation.

heartbreaking.

The injuries to the baby do not appear to be due to a one-off accident or even a single act of cruely rather sustained cruelty resulting in multiple injuries. It is hard to say from the reporting whether the cruelty was a result of their inability to care for the baby or deliberate acts

It's a fine line between allowing parents with learning disabilities to care for their children or removing them at birth. It is worrying that the social worker was concerned and this was not responded but if the parent's had not been given the opportunity to care for their children, public opinion would probably be against Social Services.

Not sure what would be gained by locking up two people with learning difficulties who although cruel, as a result of neglect, may not have been able to understand the consequences of their lack of action.

Its a very sad situation.

Its a shame the parents have not been sterilized to stop this happening again.

Sod this Human Rights brigade. Its inevitable that another pregnancy will occur & the baby will be another statistic put straight into care as the parents just dont have the learning capability to care for a child.

There's neglect due to being special needs.which can be helped with support. But there's cruelty which should not be allowed to happen again, with the consequence of a custodial sentence in a specialised unit with professionals, who can make them see what they have done is wrong. :-|

The buck lies with the parents, they hurt the child. But social services must take part blame in not offering home support on a daily basis. For not monitoring the child closely as it MUST have been known the parents had no savvy in the first place & that the child was at risk from the start. And for not taking the child away at the first sign of neglect. :-| :-| :-|

We all wish we could save all abused/murdered babies before it happens....we all wish dreadful things on the murderers.....but we have to let it go, we are not angels who fly around giving protection to these children......it angers us,but it also makes us wonder why god put such people on this earth...unless this is hell where we dwell....so many suffer loss through murder/an illness/other....we can only cry so many tears..we never forget those dear souls, now at peace we can hold our dear ones close, and thank the lord he gave us sanity,to care and protect......
