Digital Switch over!!

This whole switch over is a little worrying:
1. We were told initially that there would be no extra cost, now we need new aerial/TV/dish or other means to receive TV.
2. Bad weather = no signal out in the countryside
3. We have had Skye for a while but as living costs go up & pensions are not rising in line with this, we may have to forgo this luxury
4. My little radio in the kitchen will need replacing or silence reign!

I have not sorted ours yet. Have a digital set up and down - however Sky is also available in lounge and piped through to bedroom.

Yesterday morning BBC2 had gone - decide I would experiment with bedroom tv - however when I pressed Menu could not see the writing on tv so gave up! Will have to sit on end of bed and try again when in the mood

Son can sort lounge tv next time he visits. He did mutter I might have problems with bedroom as it is run off Sky arial - I do not know.

I did ring the help line a few weeks ago and they assured me I would have no problems!!!!!

lots of help there.

if you had good reception previously, the it should still work, however, with a bad analogue signal it was still watchable............with a bad digital signal your picture will breakup or be lost

Had digital for over three years now, not very happy, picture regularly breaks up. Peoples' lips stop moving for a few seconds, but voice carries on. Sometimes the whole caboosh stops working, have to switch everything off and start again.

Digital is a completely different technology to analogue. Instead of requiring an extremely powerful transmitter for each individual program, digital transmits up to 20 programs on just one single frequency at one tenth of the power.

Down side is that you need a decent aerial. It is all or nothing with digital, not like analogue where you could put up with a weak picture. If your signal is breaking and your aerial is more than ten years old then replace it. Ours was installed in 1989 when the house was built and was well past its sell by. It would have needed replacing anyway before it fell down.

My TV ariel is 25 years old and have not had to replace it,,,,got a good quality digital box ,didnt replace the TV which is just about 5 years old,

never had any digital signal problems.....only at the very start with a cheap digi box,

Bernard, Check that your aerial is pointing in the correct direction, I found that my aerial was only out by about 5 degrees and it was OK whilst on the analogue system but as soon as we went to fully digital we had that problem,

with analogue you could have the telly on and turn your aerial until the picture was good,

but with digital i found that this does not work,
with digital after adjusting the aerial you then need to re tune the telly
to get all the channels

also check your connections as they can make a difference.

we went digital a few years back and and my then newish TV in my bedroom which had just had an aerial fitted has failed to work ever since - I have been told that my aerial needs repositioning -

Kay????

Kay???? Report 8 Mar 2012 18:58

thats right Ann often its just an adjustment of areil thats needed, its just that the ariels now have a much better db gain so less signal loss, but with the ariel in the correct postion shouldnt need to buy a new one,,,,,,,,people in my area havnt changed their ariels,

Bernard

Bernard Report 8 Mar 2012 19:24

I had a new aerial when digital came, fitted by well known company. No one around here is happy with digital.

The Digital changeover is not supposed to effect the radio - at least that is what we told on our local radio station.

Hope that is one small saving for you.
