I have just had a quick trawl on the internet, but can find no information about the eligibility for help with the above. One thing I do not want to do right now is ring the Benefit folk.

Does anyone know what the criteria is, ie amount of savings and income to become eligible?

Lyndi, couldn't get very far on the above site. In the end, phoned the CAB. CAB man wanted to know the far end of everything. I just ewanted a plain and simple answer to my query. He made an appointment for us to go in plus all our details. Talked it over with OH, and we shall cancel the appointment, it will be another agency who knows all our business.

I had to answer enough questions as it was. I thought they were there to advise, not find out my income and personal details.

If you go onto your own council site they usually have a calculator to see if you are eligible for HB and CT.

It was easy for me to find out that I was eligible for a small reduction on my council tax using that site, but I now have the application form from the council and they naturally want proof of everything. They want all latest bank statements, premium bonds, would want mortgage statement if I had a mortgage, pension statements,
I understand how you feel but so many people now seem to 'work the system' that these checks have to be made. I have to make a choice - is the benefit of the tax reduction worth the hassle and intrusion. :-S

That last link of Roys is the one I looked at, it gives 16K as the savings limit.

The CAB will not give your details to anyone else, they ARE there to help and be impartial but they do need to know your financial details to give proper advice, don't be put off.

The thing is there is no plain simple answer because it depends on so many variables that may be individual to you.

Yes Rose

Who ever you ask the questions to will need information to make any decision.

Surely the CAB would be best

Hi

my sister is the financial and benefit advisor for the C.A.B in england.

she would also need to know your incomings and outgoings before she could advise you ,everything depends on earnings :-D

I worked out that I could probably get a small rebate but would not be bothered to claim because of all the hassle and then you have to update them if you get any xtra income or cash. I know they need to know all income and outgoings but I wouldn't be happy with that for a small amount.

However for some benefits even if you get just 1p it does then lead you into other freebies. Not sure if that is the case with Council Tax rebate so worth checking.

Although you have already started the process, this is a good site to see what (if anything) you may be entitled to.

http://www.ageuk.entitledto.co.uk/

There are a number of other sites shown as a result of an 'entitled to' search
