I've just come across a 6 year old child in the 1841 census with the name Cardinal Woolsey. I wonder if he went by his middle name of John!!

The other day, I came across a girl called Hopestill. Poor S*D, imagine being labelled with that all her life. Needless to say, it was in America.

Well I wish that my rellies had more imagination. My lot ie had 5 or 6 brothers getting wed within a few years, and calling their offspring by the same family names.

It is a nightmare sorting out which Hannah or William belonged to which brother, and costs a fortune in certs!!

Maggie, I have quite a few Gays in my tree from Devon, including John Gay, the dramatist and poet who wrote 'The Beggar's Opera. Apparently, he was a homosexual and rumour has it that the word 'gay', to describe homosexuals, originated from his surname. One of descendant female Gays ended up in Brighton!

I transcribe for FreeBMD and come across a lot of 'titles' in the christian names. Most frequent seems to be 'Squire'.

However, it wasn't only in the 'old' days that people had these ideas. I had a neighbour who insisted that her grandchildren call her "Nanny" so that when they spoke of 'my Nanny', listeners would think they had a carer nanny. I wonder if anyone ever took any notice? I really don't think so.

lol Ber :-D

I had a Nanny, and a Da.... because their first grandchild (not me) couldn't say Granny or Grandpa (or whatever)..... and the titles stuck.

My other grandmother insisted on being called "Gran" - she said granny sounded too old :-D so they were <3Papa <3 and Gran
