I had forgotten. The only note of it I can find online for today is the new French president and Sarkozy

"In a ceremony at Paris' Arc de Triomphe, however, the two men stood side by side in silence laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to commemorate Victory in Europe Day and the surrender of Nazi forces on May 8, 1945."

No doubt if we had celebrated/commemorated today we would have been called racist or fascists

as with St Georges day

Whilst I am to young to have celebrated at the time, I do think of it every yr.

Dad served in WW2 and I got married on May 8th, he said to me when we booked the date did I know what occured on that date in 1945 ,I didn't then cos he never spoke much about the war and my history lessons were about medieval times.

I have since read up about WW2, and in later yrs dad opened up about his time in the RAF and experiences in Germany ,so yes I do think of it every yr and am greatful to all who served for their country ,if not for them I may not be here now.

It is so sad that people forget these special days. the men and women and children killed . and the fighting that took place .

We celebrated that day. that many of us had come through a terrible time.
People could now look forward to a better life . and could have freedom of speech but some people have short memories..?

All we had yesterday was the Euro . France. Spain Greece and Germany .

The media were too busy covering that court case up north!

This shower in charge of the country will never run out of mistakes & omissions to admit to.

Today in the Channel Islands we have had a Public Holiday to celebrate our Liberation from German Occupation on this day in 1945. Most of the morning was spent in publicly honouring those who fought for us, those who died for us as well as remembering those members of the forces who liberated us.
Later in the day there were also wreaths laid by both local and foreign dignitaries and members of the public in rememberance of the foreign slave labourers who died in our Islands. These labourers were from many Countries and brought here by the Germans to fortify the Islands against attack.

These ceremonies are held every year on this day.

Really strange today

Between 10 and 11 this morning there was a fly past. In fact they went over 5 times but not close enough for me to recognise the planes but they looked similar to Spitfires and sounded like old planes - a sort of drone sound.

Two groups of four planes followed by 4 groups of three planes.

Not seen anything on the local news about it.

We visited Jersey in the early 70's, camping holiday.

We hired a car to tour the island and went to the German Underground Hospital, ..... I've never been so spooked in my life, I had goose pimples upon goose pimples , I couldn't wait to get out of there.

I cant begin to think what happened there.

I would like to thank my relatives who went to war and thankfully all came back, but had to live with the horrors of war.

In Africa, Uncles Edgar and Harry. Europe 2nd cousin Jack.

In Africa and Italy, FIL Fred and also his brother Ted who was in a Japanese POW camp.

Also my mum, Molly, who was on standby for D Day to follow the troops across Europe, this was cancelled at the last minute. She was a L/Cpl in the ATS, stripping out damaged and sometimes stinking tanks and completely rewiring them.

Thank you all for risking your lives to give us freedom.

To those that died, at least some of us remember you with pride, our brave countrymen and women.

My Dad served in the Far East during WW2. He was 45 when I was born and died 2years ago at the age of 89. We never learned about WW2 when I was at School in the 1970s.
Dad was always vigilant in keeping our knowledge up to date about the war. As a Grandad he was also able to teach my 21 and 13 year old about his wartime service.

Most Students learn about WW2 in History and it is studied at GCSE level. I do think the media should cover anniversarys and events which are part of our history and in which most of our relatives played a part. They are more engrossed in who's who on BGT and the Voice :-|
