Todd Aiken, Republican representative for Missouri has. in defence of his anti-abortion stance, questioned whether it's possible for a woman to become pregnant after a rape.

He also said that 'Pregnancy from rape is "really rare", and implied that the female reproductive system is able to block conception from an unwanted pregnancy'.

He goes on to say that ' “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," he said. "But let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."

A LEGITIMATE RAPE? What the hell is that?

Can anyone explain? Can this Aiken explain?

Soooo glad we don't have a president - imagine having this moron deciding the whys & wherefores of life - even worse than what we have now in the UK :-S

Beggars the mind, doesn't it, Maggie.

Heaven help the world regardless for whom they vote later this year. We're all snookered every four years, for sure!

World leaders indeed!

I presume he's educated - don't they do Biology in the USA. or do they do Biiology via the Bible?

I suppose some states don't 'approve' of Darwinism, there maybe other states that don't belive in the wheel.......
They have 4 wheels on their car, but they're not 'legitimate' wheels, therefore they don't exist, and all's right with the world

Unfortunately he's not joking. Even more unfortunately there will be people who will believe and agree with him.

It's scary to think that a misogynistic idiot like him could be in a position of power one day.

Eldrick Report 21 Aug 2012 17:15

He's not a misogynist. Ok, well, he is, but not consciously. He is merely speaking his stupid religious beliefs out loud. The same religious beliefs that make his ilk murder doctors and bomb clinics. He is not alone - plenty of his barking mad window licking colleagues hold the same views. They are all total hatstands.

He is also anti stem cell research and pro right to carry arms. Work that one out whilst sober.

he has apologised - too late you twit - you've said it now - no going back!!

Dermot Report 21 Aug 2012 21:34

It's one thing to apologise for what he said but he cannot say 'sorry' for thinking it.

Here's to the next extraordinary outburst from, some Americans say, a likeable lout. He gives me the impression of having a callous indifference to the honour of females & I cannot see any trace of creative genius or originality in his character.

I'd even prefer listening to Jeremy Clarkson ranting on about his late beloved pet dog than any more of this American guff.

Be afraid, very afraid!!!

He belongs to the Republican Party

One of the "planks" in the Republican Party platform is to repeal abortion ....... except for in cases of rape, statutory rape (where the girl is under age), and incest.

That is the "official" position, but a large number of party members believe that abortion should be available only to a much narrower group of people .............. and that group seemingly includes the Vice-Presidential candidate Paul Ryan

Over and above the Republicans, there are large numbers of so-called unregistered voters ........ ie, those who are not registered with a political party ................ who are anti-abortion

Many of them belong to extreme religious groups ......................... many of them believe that a woman who is raped "deserved it" because of the way she dressed, walked, or just because she was a woman.

Apart from it being on our news, we watched a bit of CNN earlier this evening ........... and they skewered Atkins! Proved his "rape victims don't get pregnant" was "hogwash", as an eminent ObGyn surgeon put it.

These are quotes from other Republican politicians .....................

-----------
Republican state Rep. Pete DeGraaf suggested women should plan ahead for rape the way he keeps a spare tire. A few weeks later, Indiana state Rep. Eric Turner, a Republican, said some women might fake being raped in order to get free abortions.

Former presidential hopeful Rick Santorum suggested doctors who perform an abortion on a woman who becomes pregnant from an attack should be thrown in jail and this year suggested rape victims who become pregnant from an attack should be forced to keep the baby and "make the best out of a bad situation."

More than 200 Republican members of Congress joined him [Atkins] in co-sponsoring House Resolution 3, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, when it contained language restricting the exception for federally funded abortions to "an act of forcible rape or, if a minor, an act of incest."

--------

these are the guys who want to run the US

Because the fact seems to be that the Senate may well have a Republican majority after the November elections ........ they only need to get 4 more seats

and Obama is a Democrat ........... so will then struggle to get any of his bills through.

Whichever way it goes ................... we are likely to hear much more of this sort of nonsense

and then there is the fear that success in the US will embolden anti-abortion activists in other countries.

The USA is creeping towards being a fundamentalist christian country, with their own brand of 'sharia' law. There is very little standing in the way of this sort of extremist clap trap. And Sylvia is right. It is contagious and will spread.

Shhhh, listen - is that the sound of condemnation from the men in frocks in the vatican and lambeth? No?

How surprising.
