I just renewed my membership.

I DON'T have Auto Renew.

In previous years I have checked My Account after renewing, and found the GR system changed my renewal to AUTO!

I reported this "bug" and was assured it would be looked into and fixed.

I just checked My Account (immediately after payment) and found the Auto Renew was ticked!!

I made sure to untick the Auto Renew AGAIN!!

So if you don't have Auto Renew, check it if/when you renew.

As you know I renewed tonight also, yep it had reverted back to auto renew on

Soon changed that :-D

Auto Renew is the default position ..................

and yes, it always reverts back to that even after you click it off

I told GR about this some time ago (not sure if it was last year, or the year before).

They told me it was a fault, and it would be fixed.

Looks like they told others that it was default.

There should be a note on the Subscribe page to let people know about it.

What if a member dies? How would their family get the money back?

:-(

I thought you were unhappy with the site and had decided not to renew Scozz :-S

Stephen, 'Default' position means an automatic setting which is set by the site but which can usually be altered by the user.

I have used auto renew since 2003 - it's cheaper than stopping and starting membership.

Don't know if GR do refunds if a death occurs. The family probably would have more to think about.

SCOZZ - thanks - I've unticked the auto renew box because I personally want to be informed when my subscription is due so I can decide if I want to continue my membership.

Cynthia ~ I said I wouldn't renew if I couldn't use the new tree.

I've been considering renewing for the last month or so.

I don't like the new tree (it's too slow!) but I enjoy using the boards.

I haven't used Auto Renew at all. My 2nd year on GR, they tried to use it (when I was unaware of the tick on Auto Renew), but it didn't work because I had a new credit card. Since then I make sure the Auto is NOT ticked.

I check from time to time to make sure the GRemlins haven't changed it back to Auto ~ it happened to my account!

Cheaper on Auto Renew? I paid $15.96 Aus today. I can afford $1.33 a month! Less than 5c per day:-D If you renew within a month of your subs expiry it is considered continuous membership (and get 20% discount).

I decide what I pay for and when. Nobody else. If I pay a bit more, that's up to me. If anything happened to me, my OH would be steaming mad if GR kept charging!

Geordie ~ I wasn't notified, so make note of the date.

They always let me know by sending me this email - the last one I got was dated May this year -

Hello Lynne,

Your membership to Genes Reunited is about to come to an end.

You don't need to do anything because you've asked us to continue your membership automatically.

We'll renew your membership for "amount and date" using the card you used last time. If we are unable to do this, for example because your card has changed, we'll let you know.

If you do not want to continue your membership, please go to the Genes Reunited My Account page and select My subscription details. You can then alter your membership to 'auto renew off' and save the changes.

If you choose not to continue your membership you won't be able to contact other members to discover new ancestors. You will still be able to browse the site and access your tree.

Kind regards,

The Genes Reunited Team

Do you get an email like this???

I would be really cross if I was NOT on continuous membership & lost my discount. I am always notified as Lynski says.

If I died my bank details would be unusable, as account frozen

being on auto renew means the price doesnt go up. If you forget to renew and go over by one day, GR are entitled to Charge whatever is current for new rembers.

How long was that for Scozz?

I've been paying under £10 pa since I joined. Great value.

I usually get an email from them too and I make sure that I renew pretty smartish!

Speaking of renewing had e-mail this morning from Ancestry as
mine is due on 22nd. September, no bargains there and it is
also automatic renewal, with the option of cancelling. :-(
Can i be bothered cancelling and buying FTM 2012 and getting
six months free of Ancestry and going through the whole thing
again....can't decide. :-S

I too received an e-mail telling me my membership would be automatically renewed on the 1st sept., even though I never asked for this. My friend in the UK always pays this for me wither her credit card (I pay her in euros every 6 months), but last year, GR made several big blunders, kept saying her card wasn't valid etc. which was complete nonsense, as she pays a lot of things with it & has never had problems before, only with GR..it took weeks of mailing back & forth before they 'accepted' her card.GGGGGRRRRR GR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
