Hi there

What do I do now, when I can't find any record of a birth being registered? Is this possible in 1880?

Cheers

Would you like to put the name on the board for others to have a look?

It may be that it is mistranscribed, or the first name you are looking for may have been the name used but not the birth name? or may just be an alternative spelling? worth asking in case someone can spot it, I think it was 1875 when it became compulsory to register births.

Or.....they weren't born in England or Wales.

Ireland and Scotland have their own indicies ;-)

They could also have been informally adopted and taken the adoptive parents name at a young age/had it changed, or be the step-child of the male head of the house (children of his wife, but not him) and taken his surname.

There was no formal adoption until the 1920s.

where have you been looking?

www.freebmd.org.uk is the best site ................ and it's free.

To answer your question .......................

Yes, it is possible that the child was not registered, even though the mother was legally required to do so from the mid-1870's on. Some still managed to slip through the net.

I would first consider the suggestions put forward by the others ..............

mistranscription of the surname,

different surname from that which you expect,

different or no forename (registered as Male or Female),

wrong year

even different registration area

Thanks so much for all of your replies!

The DEATH certificate states her Christian names as Clara Jane and her dob as 28/5/1880 in London. Her maiden name was SHORT.

I can only find a birth record for a Jane Short 3rd Qtr ,London

Could this be her, and her first Christian name wasn't registered?

Yes its quite possible that the second name was added later, or not registered. What else do you know about her? If she married, the cert may show her fathers details to help in a census search. If she lived in London then you may be able to find her in the Electoral registers which are available on line.

Post the details you have if you would like people to take a look.

its Quite possible her first name was Jane and her middle name was clara. middle names were often used if the mother first name was the same as her daughters

Susan,

Could it be a couple of years out ??

Clara Jane SHORT 1878 June QRT West Bromwich....Which would at least cover the correct Qrt for her birth .....

G/grandfather born in Liverpool 1872 - never registered. All his siblings were.

Finally found his baptism, along with those of all his siblings.

Thank goodness for the Catholic Registers.

Both his parents were 'troubled' by falling down water, so as he was the youngest he was probably just forgotten about. :-)
