and Saturday morning my sister to say mom had had a stroke and was on her way to Truro hospital. Mom had lost the use of her left arm and leg and her face had dropped. Better news later on Saturday to say movement had returned a small amount and her face had gone back. But she cannot swallow and is on a drip. Yesterday she was out of bed but wanted a drink - bless her. |

Sorry to hear this Mary, such a worry for you. My Dad had a stroke which sounds like your Mum's when he was 87 he recovered most of his facilities very well. I hope it is the same for your Mum. |

Yes Mary, hope she's well soon. Early recovery of movement and muscle is very encouraging that no major damage has occurred. I think the diffrence between "bleeding" and "clot" is that bleeding is called a haemorrage (cerebral in this case) whereas a clot is formed in some other part of the body, often the lung. It get caught in the narrow blood vessels in the brain and shuts off oxygen to the tissue. From what you say it's hopeful the clot moved on before any serious damage occurred. Prayers for your Mum. |

Thank you all for your replies - I really appreciate it. But I have had a call from my sister this afternoon to say the hospital phoned to say mom seen by consultant and she did not have a stroke - she has a water infection. They are waiting for transport to take her back to the Care Home. My sister and I are shocked - how can a water infection give you symptons of a stroke ? Slurred speech, face dropped, unable to swallow (although she can now do this) - anyway my sister will go and see her when she gets back to the home. |

Mary, if elderly people get a serious infection, or undergo other physical challenges such as surgery, it can really upset their body chemistry for a while, and this will affect brain function. I am guessing this is what happened to your mother. |

Mary,,,,,,,,, a WI in the elderly can cause confusion and muzzy speech, often mistaken for stroke symptoms....as she seemed to improve with saline she may have been dehydrated aswell,,,,,,some anti bios and more fluid intake should see great improvment......the home should make sure elderly people drink lots... |
