Do you know?

I do - it's in WEST LOTHIAN, SCOTLAND.

The GR system defaults to Bo'ness FALKIRK Stirlingshire Scotland.

I sent a message, but I'm sure it will take forever to fix........... they still haven't changed SYDNEY to being in NEW SOUTH WALES, their system defaults to WESTERN AUSTRALIA! I told them about that at least two years ago.

I wish they'd look at an atlas.

Used to be in West Lothian. Since 1996 it's formed part of the Falkirk unitary authority.

I bought some documents from Scotland's People a few hours ago.

They have Bo'ness listed as in West Lothian.

Scozz, How old (What year) are the documents you have from Scotlands people?

Boundries have changed over the years as per the link i posted at 11:09 above

West Lothian is a council area/district (i think) which is different to a County

see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Lothian

A nice Port Town though there is no harbour there to speak of now. My Grandfather was a ships pilot there and one of my Aunts was born there in 1910. Original name Borrowstoun Ness. The "Borrow stone" was thought to have been a limit marker of three counties and the Ness a headland.

I suspect that the GR system picks up every location entered and someone periodically adds it to a database. For "periodically" read "seldom".

(Excellent bacon rolls and tea in the local caff!) ;-)

Midlothian, West Lothian & East Lothian - I have relatives from those COUNTIES.

I also have relatives from STIRLINGSHIRE (not Sterlingshire)

As I said, I bought documents YESTERDAY from Scotland's People, Bo'ness was listed under WEST LOTHIAN.

I know the council boundaries change but how are non UK residents supposed to keep track of this?

Bo'ness is still in WEST LOTHIAN, but comes under the administration of the Falkirk council.

I googled - was told it's in Stirlingshire!!!!!!

This is confusing. It's still in West Lothian, but under Falkirk (Stirlingshire) for council etc etc

Roy - my documents are from 1900-1910, when Bo'ness WAS in West Lothian.

BUT ~ towns on the border of Renfrewshire & Lanarkshire are all muddled up - the DATES on the documents don't match up with the dates of the boundary changes. Very frustrating.

My understanding is that Bo'ness is in West Lothian but still comes under Falkirk (Stirlingshire) so to get back to the OP

GR have Bo'ness down as FALKIRK Stirlingshire Scotland is confusing but it is correct, Thats not saying that Bo'ness West Lothian is wrong, But that both appear to be correct (very confusing)

I also Googled for a solicitor using just "Bo'ness Stirlingshire" to check what their address would say and the link below is lists them as Bo'Ness Stirlingshire EH51

http://www.solicitors-scotland.co.uk/boness.htm

If solicitor's don't no their correct address what chance do the rest of us have

As I noted above, the "Borrow Stoun" Burgh Stone after which the town is named was a marker of three Burgh boundaries so in effect the town could be said to be in three differents Burghs.

Nowadays of course we have Geographical divisions AND Adminisrative divisions

The point of the OP, as you say, is GR's database can be confusing.

I don't drink tea

But I feel like having a big cup of tea and a good lie down

With an atlas

Must check, see if GR still insists that Sydney NSW is in Western Australia.
