Prequels aren't a new thing. The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle was a prequel. Doyle had killed off Sherlock Holmes in The Final Problem. There was such a public outcry at the death of Holmes that Doyle decided to write another book set at an earlier time.
However, he did go on to write sequels to The Final Problem in which Holmes claims to have faked his own death.
Now I wonder if somebody could write a prequel to this thread? :-S

Also prequels can often be written by someone else and not the original author.

ie Wide Sargasso Sea - prequel to Jane Eyre and definately not written by a Bronte!

Star Wars first 3 out in the 70's brill. Second three out in the late 90's dire.

It's the same with films. The original star wars films were made in the late 70s and early 80s. They then made another three films that were set before the events of the original trilogy. That second trilogy were prequels. ;-)

Prequels are often written after the original.

A sequel is basically a second book etc.

But a prequel will be written as something that is written after the original one but preceeds it chronologically if you see what I mean

no, Jude

a "prequel" is a book that is written after 1 or more books have been written

It is usually produced after several books in a series have been published, ad is an attempt to explain what happened in the life (lives) of the main character(s) BEFORE the events shown in the first book in the series.

If JR Rowling were to write about Harry Potter's parents and their life at Hogwarts before they got married and were killed ......... that would be the prequel to the Harry Potter series.
