'I' before 'E' except when there's a feisty heist on weird beige foreign neighbours reinventing protein at their leisure

We had I before E except after C as a mantra in the 50s...lolol

I believe that the Rule is insufficient

These rules are a weight upon our shoulders.

Should put that weight on a freight train.

But a sleight of hand would break the rules.

Need some coffee as the caffeine will help decipher this conundrum, which I'll do at a leisurely pace.

But, I mightn't sleep well under my eiderdown if I think about the imminent birth of the sovereign's great grandchild. (But I'm sure their nursery will be lovely).

In the morning I'll contemplate whether I need a codeine to overcome the effects of those glasses of madeira. Then I'll deign to consider whether I'm up to facing eight hours at work. Either way, it won't be a day of leisure.

The rule supposedly goes - "I" before "E" except after "C" but only when the sound is "E"

It does not say that in all other cases the two letters should be the other way around.

I am so glad that English is my mother tongue!

I remember a sketch that Mel Smith & Griff Rhys Jones did many years ago. They said that the i before e rule came in handy when trying to spell side; because the i was before the e and came after sea. :-D

I have forwarded your additions and comments to the originator - although an academic she may not be that grateful!
Just re-read the original - there are slight non-PC overtones I hadn't noticed - lucky not to be RR'd I suppose!
