Do you find it a sobering or cheerful thought

that if and when the expected Royal baby becomes King or Queen (given the longevity of the Royal family in general) you are unlikely to still be around lol ( apart from the youngsters on here of course :-) ).

Also, just as a random thought, in days of old when a Royal baby was born, how long do you think it would have taken for people in far flung corners of the UK to hear the news?

Will we still have a monarchy?

RamblingRose it's a very interesting point about how news travelled way back when.

Things would have been very different - think of Edward and Mrs Simpson for example.

News did travel to the corners of the globe of course but it was only accessible in general terms to the privileged few.

"News" is now instant which in some ways takes the edge off it.

Errol I just had a vision of heralds leaping on horses and off to Oxford and Canterbury etc and rousing the town criers ;-) then being given fresh horses before continuing up north, west etc :-D

I find it more sobering Rose to think I shall probably not be around when William comes to the throne!!! :-D

Yes we do get instant news now don't we. And photos. I guess it would have been a while before those of us here 'in the stick' got to hear anything. And then there would have been somebody waiting in the wings ready to depose whoever made it to the throne.

lol RamblingRose - you do of course realise that back then everything was coloured in greyscale.

It must have been so exciting when the world suddenly became colourful.

I think we should have a Genes community town crier pmsl - would be fun

AnninGlos there were times when people heard things the other side of the world before folk did in certain parts of this country.

I think Charles finds it sobering that he may not be around by the time he accedes to the throne lol

I wonder if many even knew who was monarch or even that we had one.

It was not terribly relevant to them.

More important was the vicar and local bishop and circuit judges maybe.

They don't have a lot of immediate relevance to our own lives so those of our ancestors must have been pretty much untouched.

I would imagine a procalmation would have been sent from London relayed on and each town crier would done the deed. with a bell and loud voice.... :-D :-D :-D probaally within a week or so it was heard from Lands End to John O'Groats..

By 2050, there will be 20m over-65s. I wish I could be one of them - but alas!
