I suppose there must be some ...just wondered at "males" comment ..had a look on line ..not much there really ..just odd cases ....x

I helped someone trace his birth family a while back....he told me his adoption didn't work out so he was using his birth name

Oh ,,, interesting .....will have a root about me thinks .... :-S

As far as posting on the boards is concerned, we have to remember that it is not secure.

Consequently it is inadvisable to post the full dob for someone who could be living, or their contact details.

For instance, Joe Bloggs b 22 Aug 1953 at the Maternity Home, Croydon is unacceptable, but Joe Bloggs b Aug 1953 in Croydon is! The exception would be if you know for sure that he was adopted and had a name change.

Someone has said that many adoptions, particularly for males, are unsuccessful and the adoptee has reverted to their birth name, so on that basis its 6 of 1 and half a dozen of the other :-D

My tree only has 58 people in it on this site and not one is living....I removed myself and parents by putting in " living person"

On the site where I do have my tree again it is private and wouldn't dream of adding my sister or children to either tree..

One of the reasons I have not got myself in my tree is because that way old friends cannot find me by using the search tree function, as hiding living relatives will not do that

Jax. I have never used that option to hide all living relatives myself. And I think that is good advice and would mean that Frances and all her generation and many older ones probably would have their details hidden from everybody except Frances.

But when I share trees with some, they have no dead relatives at all. Presumably they have not entered a death date for a relative and programme assumes they are still a living relly. When an ancestor was born in, say, 1888, it looks a bit silly and does not help me when I am trying to understand someone else's tree to just see blanks for individuals born well over 100 years ago.

One of GR’s T&C is that names of living relatives should not be added to our trees without their permission.
Although your parents and spouse may not mind, any siblings/cousins/aunts or uncles might! Personally, I wouldn’t add the younger generation at all. The place for that is on an offline tree.

If you go into ‘my account’ scroll down to the section about hiding living relatives, and select ‘yes’. Even though their names, year and place of birth will show up in a search of the site, details won’t be on view if you were to open your tree.

If you wanted to hide them further, give them a different name such as ‘Living Husband’ or wife/partner etc.

Many of us who have been on this site for some while no longer open our trees. Instead we will give a typed explanation as to the various relationships. Always build up a trust before you choose to do so – there are members’ who delight in ‘collecting names’ without doing any of the research.

Only take other peoples trees as a guide. However good a researcher, we all make mistakes.

If you want to share your tree on here with anyone they will have to also be a paying member...A lot of people do not share their trees but will help others with little snippets of info

You can hide living relatives on your tree which would include yourself.

I am very new to all this genealogy topic. Please help me. If I do a family tree and want to let any inquirer be able to see it, what is the way to go about that?

Will people be able to get all the information, or can I keep some of it confidential?

I am interested in family members who may be out there, being able to find out my information, but I do not want to be giving away private information that can be used for Identity theft. Is it a good idea to put myself on the family tree?
