Think I will be giving these a wide berth - there seem to have been a few incidents with them in recent months :-(

I don't think i will bother going on a river cruise on one of those any day soon.

Just after the war, DUKWs (pronounced Ducks) were all the rage in seaside resorts.

I wondered what had happened to them, and I think these ducks are roughly the same thing.

Just wickied to check on DUKW.

"D" indicated a vehicle designed in 1942,
"U" meant "utility",
"K" indicated driven front wheels,
"W" indicated two powered rear axles.

Think they were used as troop landing craft in WW2. You could drive from the sea quite a distance inland with loads of passengers.

Yes there have been other incidents with these, I have always fancied taking a trip on the Thames in one of them but this has made me decide - no way am I going to.

Researching:
I am researching the Wotherspoon family from the Old/New Monkland areas of Scotland, some moved to the Leslie and Kelty areas of Fife and I'm having problems linking the Wotherspoon's from Leslie and the Wotherspoon's from Kelty. I am also researching the Clusker family from Co. Meath in Ireland who moved to West Lothian and from there to Fife............"Vita non est vivere sed valere vita est"

I did intend to have trip on one of these in the summer, but never did. I heard about a fire today, but I'd still have a trip on one if I get the chance to, that's if they're still going :-D

Yes John,

During my National Service in the RAF in 1950, we had a DUKW - not the slightest bit of bother with it.

Think the ones on the Thames are fairly safe, they have been going for years and I have never heard of any incidents with them.

If I am right they were the first in the UK. And have been going for Donkeys years.

Robert :-D :-D Remember it was a treat when we went to Morecambe. DUKW's went out quite a distance across the sands, then into the sea with spray everywhere (bit like water splash at Alton Towers), then back across the sands at quite a lick.

Great fun, but I can imagine they would have been banned on safety grounds. Don't remember feeling particularly safe - but DUKWs were great fun :-D
