There won't much of a Christmas for the badgers in Gloucestershire and Somerset. Does the ad mean that J.L. are against Brave Dave's "Bag a badger today" policy?

:-( Rollo. Poor badgers, perhaps Santa will bring DC's daughter 'Wind in the Willows' and then daddy can explain to her why he had old badger and his family shot for no good reason.

Not to my taste at all. Far too twee.

But if you like it I'm sure John Lewis would love you to buy all this.

Ah Gwynne, for all my sophistication (lol) I am still a child at heart :-) and though it may be twee, and a cynical advertising ploy, I can think of worse things to spend my money on than a hare and a bear ;-)

Add: certainly less cynical than another company whose ad features rather more expensive gifts and a whacking interest rate, to tip doting mothers ( aimed at mothers of course) into terminal penury ;-)
