Did she butter the top of the loaf first like my Nan? I was always afraid the whole loaf was going to disappear behind the shelf made by her stays :-D

As I was peeling the spuds just now and trying to keep my fingers intact. It reminded me of the way my gran, and it seems from the boss, my mother in law too used to cut bread. Gran would hold it to her chest and cut slices of by cutting towards her bosom! :-0

I guess in those days of foundation garments ladies were armour plated! ;-)

Perhaps it was the swinging sixties that brought this practice to an end :-S
