Yesterdays newspaper had an article saying that, thanks to the EU, we no longer have a 7 day 'cooling off' period when ordering something from a doorstep visitor - But , if what we want is standard size and not specifically made for the customer then there is 14 days cooling of. |

A lot of them are like that apparently - there are some good companies and some bad but the majority charge for tradespeople to be included. Not a bad place to get a general overview though, although with some sites (I am not singling any one site out) I would question the veracity of the comments and ask whether "bad" comments are filtered out at the request of the advertiser. |

There is an on-line site called www.checkatrade.com where people apparently leave testimonials/references. |

Thank you, AnnCardiff, for your information and kind words. I understand my sister did approach Trading Standards earlier this year. They were not able to help her. |

Well, somebody keeps jumping all over my posts, AnnC's posts and several others. Must be a mirage. We must all be seeing things. |

I was not jumping on what you had posted - merely providing correct information as supplied by the government. By their own statement, the Office of Fair Trading has not been replaced by the FCA and they advise that for consumer problems, people contact their local CAB (as you have quite accurately stated above). |

The Office of Fair Trading was responsible for protecting consumer interests throughout the UK. It closed on 01 April 2014, with its responsibilities passing to a number of different organisations including the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the Financial Conduct Authority . |

AnnC. If you read the post carefully, facts c & p'd prove you and police were correct. Unexpected, but think it is a sort of apology. Plenty more to come hopefully. But good start. |

That is the first time I have seen you (sorry, a certain poster who always seems to be right) admit to getting something wrong. Well done for apologising to AnnC, whoever you may be. |
