We are trying to find out some information on my wifes great grandfather - Edward Roper.
We believe he was born in Reading and came to Portsmouth with the army during the 1st World War asd he was serving with the Horse Artillery. He married Ellen Maud (surname - Lyn) we think.
They lived in Portsmouth until she died in 1952 and Edward died in 1966. They had four children. Three boys, Edward, Leonard and Stanley and a daughter named Kathleen who was born in April 1918. Kathleen died in 2002.
We are trying to find out as much info as we can as we would love to put together a tree to help us trace back throughout the years but really do not know where to start.
Please can anyone help?

Looks likely for their marriage, buying the cert from the GRO will give you father's names.

Jason, freebmd.org.uk gives Kathleen's birth which confirms mother's maiden name as Lyne. It's a very useful site and well worth learning to use. :-)

not seeing a birth for him think you need that marriage cert for his dads name

There is one born in Reading in 1886. I can't find him in 1911. It is possible he lied about his age to appear older than Ellen.

My Dad's cousin has managed to find out that the Roper's (My Grandmothers maiden name) descended from Sir Thomas Moore. His daughter Margaret Moore married William Roper back in the 16th Century.
