I have been researching my Vickery family who hail from paddington. In the 1901 census, George the head of the house is found at the Royal Mineral Hospital in Bath having, I presume some treatment. Now my family appear to have been very poor so do you think it is likely that the vestry would have paid for this! I'm sure George wouldn't have been able to afford the trip there, let alone any treatment! I was wondering whether it would be possible to locate any record of George working for the church, If I could find out which one? Would they keep records of their carman do you think? George Vickery abt 1851 Paddington, Middlesex, England Patient Bath Somerset Merry ------ This particular guy is seemingly describer as "Carman" on the 1891 Census. ------------ Another response to the meaning of "Vestry Carman" found by Gogling ..... ------- Any suggestions please, on what exactly a Vestry Carman in Lambeth was. The 'Vestry' was the somewhat oldfashioned name for the local council (for the borough or civil parish), a hangover from when the old parish adminsirators met in or near the church vestry. By 1895, they would be meeting in the town hall, but the old word hung on.. He was then a heavy carter employed by the local council, possibly as a dustman, possibly transporting heavy goods too and fron for them. ------ and another (my emphasis by capitalizing the words) ........... http://wellcomelibrary.org/moh/report/b18249590/132#?asi=0&ai=132 ......... The recommendations suggested by the conjoint Sub-Committee of the Sanitary and Wharf Committees and adopted by the Vestry on the 9th December, 1897, are fully set out on pages 1662-3 and 1689 of the 1897 Minutes. They have reference to all descriptions of Trade Refuse (excepting offal, builders' refuse, and manure) being moved at a uniform charge of twopence per basket, the VESTRY'S CARMAN being supplied with a small book and counterfoil to act as a check for the quantity of refuse removed. Particulars of such removal were sent round by circular to grocers, provision dealers, etc.; whilst in respect of Trade Refuse left in the streets by costermongers, the ........ -------

What happened was that your query was slow to post so you hit Submit again. It was still slow, so you hit Submit again That means the same query was actually submitted 3 times ............ hence 3 different threads, numbered consecutively ........ general_chat/thread/1352030 general_chat/thread/1352031 general_chat/thread/1352032 In future, you must resist the impulse to keep hitting Submit!! It does not speed up the action, but it does result in duplicate threads appearing! This post is a simple question of what does the term "Vestry Carman" mean. I've come across it and would like to know what that job entailed.

	Alexandra, as you have two other posts regarding this may I suggest that you delete them and concentrate on this particular post. Do you have any details of the person who may have worked for the Council? A name would help, unless the person is still living. Kind regards Allan

Member Since: January 2015 Posts: 9 Send Message	Can somebody please tell me what a Vestry Carman would have done. I can't find a definite answer on Google. I've found that Vestry meant the Council. So I assume he worked for the Council (Fulham, London). What exactly would he have done?
