A new tree!!!

They have changed the tree!!! It's suddenly come up all dark green with a huge 'fly-out' Edit screen that obscures the whole tree. OMG! What have they done and why??? Has anybody seen any 'anouncement' that this was in the offing???

I've just tried to send them 'feedback' using the 'send feedback' link on the new tree page and I just get an error message. What I tried to say is this...

"This is AWFUL!

It has become impossible to work with the tree open as a small window since the right hand side fly out now extends right across the window obscuring any chance of being able to see any of the immediate rellies of the person you are editing.

I always work with a number of other windows open as well as my tree (Wiki, Ancestry, sometimes a 2nd copy of my tree, etc, etc) and it is essential that the tree window can be viewed at a reduced size (1/3 - 1/2 screen view) so that one can read the info from these other pages. this new version makes that virtually impossible.

There is now a lot of empty space at top and bottom of the tree area of the window (as it shows just 3 generations). In my experience most trees show 'huge' numbers of siblings right across the window (and sometimes beyond!). When I first joined GR some years ago, the Edit section of the window was situated below the displayed tree, which meant that the space available in the window was much better utilised.

Can we not have the Edit fly out from the bottom of the screen - but not obscuring the tree??

One last point. Should we not have been made aware of the impending change through an 'Announcement'? The most recent 'announcement' that I can see is dated August 2015!!!

I'm always happy to help in any development of the tree as I still think that Genes have the easiest and most user-friendly tree builder... but this latest 'improvement' is sadly not making anything better."

They've never made it easy to find a link to 'Support' on this website - can some kind person remind me where to find it so that I can try sending my thoughts directly to them...

The Tree was changed quite a few years ago - have you had a break from the site?
In all honesty, mine looks exactly the same as it did a few days ago, deffinately no dark green background :-S

As for the 'flyer', on mine it extends about 1/3rd of the way across. Have you perhaps increased the size of the magnification at some point? Hold down the Ctrl button and tap the - (Minus) sign a few times to see if that makes any difference.

Apologise - someone else reported they'd had the same problem, but that it was back to 'normal' now. See if the suggestions made on the thread help you.

Hi Detective,

No, this is a new change. I know all about the last one(s)! I 'm a regular (daily) user of the site and have a ridiculously large tree here.

When I opened a copy of my tree in a new tab this morning it came up looking very different with an 'address' of:
(URL deleted)
rather than the usual http://tree.genesreunited.co.uk/V3.4.3

Try pasting that top link into your browser and you'll see what I see.

Thankfully, now, when I open a new copy it reverts to the 'usual' version that we have all become used to - but it makes me worried about what they may be about to foist upon us...

Hmm - how strange! As you as well as the poster on the other thread have things back to normal, it must have been a blip.

You might want to remove the link as it leads to your own tree with all your personal details. (You're slightly older than me ;-))

Hmm, 'over 21' for the third time...! I've deleted the URL from this thread.

Well, now you see it - now you don't. I just hope they don't introduce it as a new version... Actually, I do seem to remember they did try a version like it a few years ago - but it came to nothing.

Strange that I and a few others saw it this morning.

Ah well, back to Robert of Worms.

Lilybids - don't worry. You're the only one who can see it. If I click on it, it leads to my tree.

BTW, good to see you posting. :-)
