Built in 1847, this is Auckland’s oldest church. It was designed by Frederick Thatcher to a cruciform plan and prefabricated at St Johns College, Tamaki. It was then shipped to the site and assembled. The church’s nave was extended in 1862, but there have been few changes since then. In 1930 a lych gate was built – a memorial to those who served in the 1860s New Zealand wars.

My husband's gg grandfather was a Methodist minister in Auckland New Zealand, probably from the mid 1860s until about 1870.

I wish I had more information!

He was probably a Wesleyan Methodist at that era, but maybe not.

In case you're wondering ...............

OH's grandfather was a Wesleyan Methodist Minister in Wales early last century, and I found a lot of info on him via Google.

He was Wesleyan... a minister in NZ untill 1870, when he & his family came to Oz, their youngest son born 1876 in NZ is my husband's great-grandfather.

A wee bit of info from an article in the newspapaper when he died.....

A Methodist Preacher. Mr. X was a member of the Methodist Church since he was twelve years of age, and acted at different times as a trustee for five churches in New Zealand and South Australia, He preached in 30 different Methodist circuits in New Zealand, Queensland, and South Australia

The surname is a popular name, but his first name is not!

Sylvia.... I checked the lists, but he's not there. Probably because he only stayed in NZ for about 15 years and died in Australia (at the nice old age of 90, his father lived until he was 106!!).


Great-grandad married a Lutheran...... that didn't go well with either of the families!

From the introduction:-

To the best of the family knowledge, he trained in England. His children were born in Canterbury (Auckland) but we believe he travelled around (the north island) to various churches. I'll pm you his name, don't want to post it here.
