I have come across an abbreviation and I am stuck. Its "Ai", does anyone have any ideas what it may be short for. In the census its Ai Walsh

There are actually several birth records in the same name, seem to be mainly in Yorkshire in mid 19th century.

It looks like his name was Ai, though I do wonder if his name was Albert ie Al. The family names on the 1881 census are strangely abbreviated.

Does this happen to be the family in 1871? If so then it definitely says Ai on the image and there is a birth in 1862 that would match:-

Thank you to every one, I am sure its an abbreviation rather than a name, as there are not many Ai's around, and in fact this is the first time I saw it, perhaps it is any of the names you have all suggested, But I am pretty sure that in the mid 1860's there were not too many Yorkshireman called Alonso or Aloysius, however they would have sounded rest funny in a yourkshire accent. Maybe the censor said is this your son, and William said "Aye"!

Thanks everyone ;-)

Death as I posted 4 Jun 2016 14:02........

I don't understand why some people complain about searchers posting the same enquiry on two boards (how very dare they) because 'helpers might waste time looking for information that has already been found' :-S

edit. as I already posted, it does look as if his name was actually 'Ai'. 'Odd' names are by no means a modern celebrity invention.

sorry Island .................

by the time I had searched through ancestry and FMP to find the information I posted above, I admit that had completely forgotten that you had posted the1874 death of Ai Walsh.

I was trying to get information on all the Ai Walsh's that I had found together in an attempt to see if Ai really was the name ........ and I think it was.

Ai is on all bmds that I could find.

I also found quite a few (more than 30) people with the name Ai but with other surnames in Yorkshire
