Maybe I should have said ‘made’.

Not strictly true. Your personal details are printed in England. :-D

Personally I don’t think a digital ID will be secure enough and think they should at least

explore a card similar to a driving license.

And our Britishpassports are printed in Poland :-(

Well, just checked and our banknotes are printed in Essex - so why would they not print tangible id cards there?

JoyLouise Report 27 Sep 2025 08:57

As I said earlier, tangible or electronic id cards, makes no difference but perhaps easier for hackers if you have an electronic id.

I hope that newspaper is wrong. I was thinking those who print our paper money would get the job of tangible id cards but while I am thinking Bank of England I have no idea whether our notes are printed in the UK or not - have not googled that question, so perhaps I ought to do so.

According one of the newspapers much of the work on the digital I’d will be done in an Eastern European country - that’s secure then :-|

And how will it stop illegal working? They don’t pay any sort of tax and don’t have NI numbers anyway.

I don't have a smartphone either, but as the first rollout is for working folk, I'm not holding my breath for the rollout to be completed for all.

I loved the idea, put forward by someone, that ifyou don’t have a mobile you could have it on laptop or computer. I definately don’t fancy lugging one of those around ;-)

I hate queuing behind people paying for something on their mobile - it seems to take so long. Last one must have taken 5 minutes. You can see on the buses. The oldies slap their pass down, the youngsters take ages to find the app they need.

You will need digital ID to get a job, but you need a job to be able to afford the smart phone - catch 22.

Has Andy B thrown his hat into the ring yet?

The women seem to be jumping in fairly quickly but none stands out for me.

I can think of one other - but fairly new to Parliament - who would do the job admirably. He is bright, a good speaker and a man of the people but he may feel that he needs more parliamentary experience before putting himself forward.

Starmer. There we are then. If you know, you know ;-) :-D

According to today's newspaper there will be a paper id document available for those who don't have a suitable phone. I do have a smart phone, albeit an old one, but I don't want digital id on it for the same reason I won't put a banking app on it. It's easy to lose a phone and even when it's password protected a determined hacker would get in.

How will it work for those who don't have a mobile ?
I don't have one, never had one, really don't want one, & I'm sure I'm not the only one !
Are the government going to make it mandatory that rhose of us who don't have one HAVE to get one ?

As for stopping illegal immigrants ! How ? they throw their phones into the ocean !!

Joan.

I think Starmer panics too much and wants to appease too many people. Standing firm is not his style!

Also, does anyone think there's been too much fuss over this identity thing? During WW2 everyone carried identity cards but times have moved on and if they are re-introduced, if tangible ones - I can see some bright spark being able to forge them very quickly and if electronically, hackers will have no problem getting info from phones!

Can Starmer not sort out the Civil Service people as he promised before turning his 'talents' to identitifications? From my experience with the CS, I get the feeling that there are too many people still working from home. :-(

I don't have a problem with carrying ID but do have a problem with it only being (proposed) as Digital only.

Starmer said on TV that we all carry digital id in some form already - who is all?

OK, so I don't have a smart phone. Don't want to lug anything else around ( heavier than my little old phone) and I muck up OH's phone every time I use it.

I wouldn't have a banking app on a smart phone so why would I want all my life info on one.

A comment on an article in the Telepgraph mentioned that a hospitl the writer had been in had added QR codes to lockers so you could book your meals!!!!!! I don't take anything expensive into hospital - just a few coins to buy a paper from the trolley.

I obviously must live in a parallel world to politicians.
