I have been researching my family tree for over 30 years and it is not very often I make mistakes. however this time I have made a monumental error in assuming that my William McEwan who was born in 1898 went on to marry. However I checked on Scotlands People today to discover that my William died on 7/4/1927 and that he was single!! Despite the fact that some of my relatives had numerous children I always try to find out if they married and had children.(It increases the number of people in my family tree }.Thanks for all your replies.

Perhaps they married in a registry office in 1923, then had a church ceremony in 1930?

The RC Church doesn't recognise registry office weddings, I believe.

The 1923 cert will confirm - or not.

I would assume that your couple would have got a marriage certificate at the time so wouldn't have had any problems in the future.

Are you sure of your grandmother's brother's name? Could he have been a half-brother with a different surname? Just an idea to think about.

Findmypast don't usually have Scottish marriages. Are you sure that is where the information about the marriage came from?

My grandmother's brother William McEwan (or McEwen) was married in St Alphonsus's RC Church Calton Glasgow on 24/9/1930. He married a Mary Fulton. This
information was obtained from the Find My Past site.The church records confirm this information. However on trying to obtain details of the marriage on the Scotlands People Web site I was advised that the only record they have is of a Mary Oliver Russell Fulton marrying at that time but not to a William McEwan.!. In 1930 it was up to the minister/priest to advise the authorities of the marriage.This appears not to have been done although other marriages on the same page of the church register are shown on the Scotlands People Site.
I assume that this could probably have caused problems for the couple later in life if they had to prove theywere married. '
